Just be cautious doing that; You may need to mix in sort of additive if you do that or you'll risk a lot of knock - The Ethanol replaces the anti-knock/octane booster chemicals they used to mix in most forecourt fuels.

That's one of the sad missed opportunities with E10 - They could have made it 105RON or something, so cars designed to run on E10 could run higher compression ratios, and offset the lower energy content of ethanol.

I'm very impressed you can get that close to 50mpg in an MX5!!

Most people I know with them are glad to even get into the 40's!

High 30’s if I’m on my own. Convoy to a meet will be high 40’s 😎

😂🤣😂🤣🤣

I don't need to; but the gardener may have to 😎

E10 will dissolve the rubber in the carb on most household petrol powered machines, lawn mowers, chainsaws, small generators etc. which is why you can buy 4* online especially for these items. Quite a few articles where people have bought the excellent Aldi petrol generators and had them gum up because they were run on E10

All current branded garden machinery are designed to run on E10 without damaging seals and hoses - have been on the continent well before the UK. However, the hygroscopic nature of ethanol absorbs moisture from the air which turns to water in the fuel and long term that is not good. Manufacturers recommend ethanol fuels not to be left in the engine beyond 30 days.

We sell Stihl formulated fuels (straight and mixed) which have no ethanol at all and can remain stable and usable for up to 5 years.

I can attest to this. I have to drain the tank and clean the carb on my son's motorbike after he left it with half a tank of fuel over the winter. Hygroscopic effect combined with condensation has left water in the tank.

Having changed over to E5 petrol I regularly achieve in excess of 70 mpg.  My journeys are usually short and live in a very hilly area.

Me too.  I tried Tesco Millennium but it made the engine harsh. Esso is good as their E5 is actually zero ethanol (although that will change this year I believe) and at the moment I’m using very quiet Texaco premium purely because I can get it for only 12p over regular.  I started filling with Shell V Power at one station where it didn’t show the price until I started pumping.  Got a funny look from the cashier when I went to pay for half a litre.

my journey to work is very hilly and I’m getting low sixties out of my AWD.

I think you had tried the wrong Tesco fuel, -“ millennium “ 😉, Tesco momentum 99 e5 we are after 😊,

Without joke , you may try another Tesco garage sometime and see if it’s the same like the Tesco you had used.
Because no two tescos are the same as no two bp, esso or texaco s.
My nearest Tesco fuel is best for me and at best price,  currently sells e5 for £1.56 a litre.

I'll have to try the Texaco super next, just need to find one that isn't so expensive!

I am starting to feel the V-Power is the least impressive of the super fuels - The V-Power diesel was great in my Mk1 D4D but I did notice it getting worse as they started changing the formulation over the years. Originally it was much smoother, but in the final days of my D4D it barely seemed better than their normal fuel. (So either their normal diesel was getting better or the V-Power diesel was getting worse!)

The petrol has been very difficult to notice any difference in my Mk4.

I think Tony's probably right that the brand seems less important than the source, but short of getting a fuel sample from all the stations and sending them off for analysis I don't think there's another reliable way of picking!

I start using hybrid assistant to learn the control. It really help me to improve the mpg, it was 69-75mpg. I got 86mpg in last trip around 11 miles 60% motorway. The perfect glide give huge mpg boost, I only did it once on the motorway.
