Also whilst I'm on can anyone explain why the Carina E 2 litre GTI is more powerful that the regular 2 litre (both have 16 valves and twin cam). Is there a way of uprating the humble non GTI performance? (P.S. And is my 1994 2.0 GLI estate really less powerful than the saloon/hatch?)

You could probably still pick up a low mileage 3S-GE from a JDM Celica for pretty cheap....

Your 2.0 GLi estate has the same 131 bhp rating as the rest of the 3S-FE Carina Es. It appears output was lowered to 125 bhp in later models, but it was the same for saloon, estate, and hatchback.

The gen3 3S-GE delivers 175 bhp and the gen 2 delivers 158 bhp. It was also placed in the MR2. The gti also has a different gearbox and brakes as well as a different front suspension.

With the extra power I'ts almost a must to upgrade your brakes as well.
