Sorry but I know this is not about cars but does anyone know if the mafia has taken over fish and chip shops.

To be honest this is the first time in over 3 years we have brought fish and chips as we normally do our own. However we went in to our local chip shop and a medium peice of cod and large chips was £11.80p. I am sure I saw two guys in dark glasses and machine guns looking at us as we paid. 😭 jesus am I getting old or what.

We often get a large chips from our local chippy. This alone is £3.80 where we are. I can't remember when last I bought both fish and chips from the chippy.

No you're not imagining it; The cost shot up shortly after they started changing the rules on fishing - Apparently another side-effect of Brexit.

My local went from about £7 for an extra large to £10-something not long after that and has only continued to creep up, ostensibly due to e.g. covid, diesel, war, arguments with the EU etc.

Mini Fish and chips and choice of Peas, Mushy peas or Curry sauce special is £7 The fish would be around 6-7 inches long.

No idea how much large is as small is enough with a sausage or fishcake.

£10.30 for a medium fish n chips at one i go to which is getting a tad ridiculous but even the price of milk is getting that expensive that it may be cheaper buying a cow for the back garden 😂

Eat in at the elite near here is £18.95 now for large haddock and chips, but that includes bread and something described as butter, peas and a drink. Oh and slice of lemon.

Last take away from somewhere else I tried had an offer on of small fish and chips for £5.75 , but was a total waste of money.

The fish was so small and thin it probably overcooked in seconds,a huge amount of inedible chips, all in the bin.

M&S do a haddock and chips for two, complete with peas and scraps within their meal deal which is fairly good. Obviously bung it in the oven yourself.

Last time I got that, two prawn cocktails , and a further box of their best chips for other meals for £12.00.

Know what you mean, years ago we regularly had local fish n chips, very nice it was too, but times change and the quality of fish and the chips round here is questionable now. We also regularly went down the coast and were spoilt by the size and quality of the fish for the price, so when back home we not too keen to pay more for inferior fish n chips.

It must be the slice of lemon that pushes up the price so much 😁

Well, an unfortunate consequence of having shop bought fish and chips last night after 3 years has been that a certain part of my anatomy has been taking a battering all day, so we're thinking that the cause could be the oil it was cooked in.

We will be sticking to cooking our own in future. It's a shame it didn't come with a lemon wedge I could have used it as a bung.😅

Aye,at least you know what's gone in food when you prepare it.

I once happened to be parked near a well regarded chippy round here when they were ripping all the equipment out for a refurb.

I can't describe what came out of that place (plaice) without making myself and the rest of us 🤮.

You're right about cooking your own that's for sure, my sister-in law told us she paid just under £15 in London for medium haddock and chips and a wally they charged £1 for. How does a family of four afford this anymore.😢

I thought a wally was someone who doesn't know what a wally is.  It just shows how wrong you can be.

If it's any consolation, I also thought a wally was someone who didn't know what a wally was. I've actually never head of a gherkin being called a wally. I've learnt something new today

I can remember going to a chippy for our lunch most Saturdays. Mum and Dad had a fish and my brother, two sisters and myself had to make do with a 'cake', (two large slices of potato with minced fish between, fried in batter, for those that don't know), each. We also got a load of chips to share. On arrival home, Mum would have the bread butered and the kettle on. I then gave her the change from the pound note. I am talking of a few years ago though. 😁

A wally could also be someone who thinks that a wally is someone who doesn't know what a wally is ,is a wally.
