Engine Listen to the rattle n smoke.

2011 2.0 d4d engine AR2-AUR20.

Just getting up to speed joining  motorway when there was a bang sound followed by loads of rattling and loads of blue smoke which looked like the car was on fire. After pulling on to the hard shoulder the engine was running very fast before it then stopped. Engine light on with code p0093 for fuel system large leak. Can't see any leaks. Any idea what it might be? I'm thinking the turbo has gone AWOL and maybe fuel pump as well. Engine oil smells burnt and she now just turns over and won't start.

Diesel run away? Rattling doesn't sound good. Any oil usage prior or high levels of oil/diesel on the dipstick? Turbo gone a possibility.

Oil level fine two days ago. Was thinking that maybe an injector broke and fell in side the cylinder and bent a rod and some valves. Seeing as i have code for large fuel leak, surely that would drop pressure and trigger the code. But the amount of smoke before i got to stop was horrendous, so is it possible that if the injector fell would it punch a hole and let oil in? Cheers.

P0093 doesn't mean there is an external fuel leak the code comes on when the fuel pressure after the high pressure pump drops significantly when detected by the common rail the most likely cause and a known issue is failure of one or more injectors which have stuck open causing the sudden drop in fuel pressure and massive over fuelling causing the rattle and smoke.

The car needs connecting to a suitable diagnostic machine and the injector operation checked with defective injectors being replaced.

Thanks for the reply. Was having a poke round just now and the expansion bottle has dropped 10mm below min with some black residue like tide marks. looks like water was going out and black bits at the bottom. No water in oil as far as i can tell. Is it possible that the head has gone quickly and the engine stopped so suddenly that it had no time to reach the oil pan as it was blown strait out the back? All so what's the likely it's bent a rod and valve or 2? Still not starting and i think its lack of compression. Cheers.

Hello. I have exactly the same error as you. This sound you had and a thick cloud of smoke behind the car. Drove to the side turned the car off. Tried to start it again and it wouldn't start again. I have the same error:

P0093

P1604(Apparently a code that appears when the car doesn't start on time when you turn the key, so you probably don't need to worry about it in this situation)

P1609

I have drained the oil and it looks fine. Solid black. And the right amount.

The coolant level is correct.

I looked into the turbo turbine and it was fine I guess. Try to wiggle it. but no play

The first second I heard the sound, I thought the gearbox had broken.

Then I saw the smoke and wondered what it was. Because if the gearbox whas damaged, smoke should not arise. And the noise whas there the whole way to i shut the car off

Then I thought the worst! The cam chain has come off. But then the car shouldn't sound like usual when you try to start it, as several fairly knowledgeable car enthusiasts have said.

Head gasket and turbo are the first thing that comes to mind, but the coolant level and the oil looks good. Torbo looks intact to.

No warnings of strange noises have arisen before the event.

My conclusion after all the searching and the error code that led me to your post is that we have the same problem. Your video shows the exact same scenario.

My car is a:

Toyota avensis 2.0 d-4d 91kw 2012. 140.000km

Manual gearbox

Hope your car is fine now and that it whas not to expensive. And hope you can help me. Please.

The display in the car showing.

Ok. My car is now fixed. 4 new injectors. Expensive but it was what was required. And it could have been worse.

Hope it can help someone in the future.

Edit: This was a job that I had the toyota mechanic do. The injectors must also be programmed

Thanks for letting us know what happened!

Did they say what was wrong with the injectors...?

e.g. leaking or worn or something?

One whas stuck in the open position. But everyone was totally worn out.

Nothing you want to put back in the machine.

Different theories why this happened. They Thought the material in the injectors was weak in combination with The increasingly environmentally demanding diesel we use in the country

-----

-The material in the injectors on this article? Around 2012 (then many people should have encountered the same problem)

-The air filter has never been changed, leading to poor combustion? (my theory).

i havent own the car long enought but had bought all things for service and had it in the car at the moment so i changed it the time i whas waiting for the mechanic to open after their vacation. And the airfilter whas the worst i ever seen. I regulary do service on my car every year and drive max 15.000km that one year. (Air Filter is 60000km or 4 years but its so cheap that i change every year)

But the filter who whas fitting in the car the moment i changed whas totaly clogged whit dirt. What to expect from a car whit this milages and never changed airfilter.

-Fuel filter has never been changed?(Read that can worn injector. idk)

-Many short drives meant that the engine never warmed up?

-Maybe a combination of bad material in the injector nozzles

Anyway, the injector nozzles looks like they are corroded

It would be interesting to know the actual reason. I think they should last more than 144,000 km as these apparently did.

The mechanics had photo of the new vs old side by side. But I don't have that picture. But this is how a new one should look anyway and my badest injector
