Groovy discs pt. 2

Hi Folks, I posted about my front disc being rusty and grooved. Well, I had tyres fitted at a reputable independent place today and asked for an opinion on my front discs. On inspection the chap said the front driver side was quite deeply grooved and the nearside was not quite as bad. He said both rears are beginning to groove and mentioned that I might check to see whether they were covered under warranty. Well, I managed to find the info on the Toyota website... and the following items are on the brakes warranty list:-

ABS Control Unit; ABS Components; Speed Sensors; Brake Booster; Brake Pipes; Disc Brake Calipers; Brake Discs; Brake Drums; Linkages; Limiter Valves; Brake Master Cylinder; Brake Fluid Reservoir; Wheel Cylinders; Vacuum Pump.

Do you think I have a chance as the mileage is only a tad over 12000 and they are all heading the same way?

Hope you all enjoying the sun this weekend 🌞👍🍻

Can only try, however expect their answer it's wear and tear and product not faulty. All the best.

Wear and tear will probably be the answer, but it never hurts to try you might be lucky. Let us know what they say.👍

Usually with most new car warranties, brake discs carry a limited warranty - often something like six months.

12,000 miles? Is that all? Appalling. They should last way longer than that.

Rust on brake disk just use your brakes more slight grooving is not a problem at 20000 miles you may need new pads but disk will last at least 40000 miles.

MFG add metal particals to the make up of brake pads to improve stopping distance.

Brake disk/rotor have a minimum thickness specifcation if this is within spec then when new pads are fitted I woud just grind down the lip on the disk but pads will take longer to bed in.

There is one more catch and it’s called premature wear. However they can argue it has happened because of lack of use. Basically the discs on these cars gets groves as a result of corrosion. All hybrids and electric vehicles that aren’t used daily and for longer miles require specific maintenance and care on two major things brakes and 12v batteries.
My neighbours just had a Corolla that is only 1.5 years old and their discs are in horrible condition. Very likely on their first mot they will be noted or even might failed to pass. There are two options how to clean them

 1. Brakes service, dismantle, clean, lube the slider pins and put back all in together

2. Drivers way - on empty road preferably motorway do quick slow downs from 60mph to 20mph , repeat 4-5 times and then continue to drive for 5-10 min before you come to a complete stop. Repeat the same procedure next day and of necessary another day until your discs gets clean and polished surfaces. Job done, no need to replace discs or other parts.
To maintain good working order on your brakes you do need to drive a bit more spirited from time to time and don’t be afraid to use the brakes properly. Once in a while quick acceleration and fast stops last moment have positive affects on the car. 👍

Hi TonyHSD I prefer option one plus giving the disk a light rub with emery tape to remove serface rust from rotor.

We’re diving in from a third party opinion of a tyre fitter.  I would at least want to see a photo of the “badly grooved” disc before commenting.
