Ran into a rather unexpected situation over the weekend.

I was driving into a relatively unfamiliar location (countryside), and was relying on the Andrioid Auto/Google Maps navigation to tell me about making the final 3-4 turns.

The navigation was setup on the dash console (Smart Connect etc) and has worked fine previously. Not this time.
The whole thing just seemingly crashed and went unresponsive. Android Auto disappeared and multiple attempts to reconnect the phone to the console (through the console) failed.
Since I was driving alone, this was a rather problematic situation. (I had studied the route to a certain extent, but not the names of the roads closer to the destination.)

There wasn't a safe place to pull to the side and fix this error for a good long stretch of the road.
When I could finally stop safely, I had to restart the car to get Android Auto to connect and display Google maps.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Any recommendations on how to force the Smart Connect system to reboot without restarting the car?

You were not approaching 'The Outer Limits' by any chance? Or 'The Twilight Zone'?

I have lost signal on the satnav then its lost as it cannot work out where you are even if you just visit a show and all car parking is in a field next to the road somtimes but starts working again when you rejoin the main road.

Look on the bright side I know of some expensive cars that the satnav is always saying you in the English channel.

Yeah. Happened to me too, several times.
Even happened on a 6 mile drive, 2 times !!

The entire unit is not crash free; My dealer recommended using Waze or google maps but both and as well the car navigation crash from time to time.
Also while not using navigation, I saw the unit crash and restart on the visual part but the radio kept on playing.

I kind of took a lesson from when I drove Renault.
The dealer there adviced me to come back for any problem that occurred. I did..
I went there more than ten times, got a replacement car billed to Renault every time.. Then they finally put in a new radio.
But that one was still not perfect.

Toyota dealer is not asking me to come back. They are less keen on repairs under warranty. They just say a thing as : hang in there mate, and keep up the good spirit.
Not helpful ... but in both cases the multimedia just crashes now and then and I need to get used to it.

Recommendations : pushing the home button for a long time, if i remember right, forces a reset and restart..
This trick works on your mobile phone too. If it blocks completely, press the ON / OFF switch for around 30 seconds.

its the phone losing the data connection, use it with offline maps

Losing data connection was not the problem for me.

I live in an area with perfect coverage as good as everywhere.

I’ve also had this issue when using Apple CarPlay. It happens to my car when I skip songs really fast.

it also can happen when I skip to the next song and change the volume at the same time.
the whole unit crashes and I have to restart the entire car.

I have an after market one bought for its short length.  Occasionally I lose AA. A quick unplug/plug fixes that most times.

I did try an ideal flexible coil one.  Power OK, no data.

New Samsung phone,  tried a 3m cable and it would not charge (in the house not car).  It was connected using a mini to C adapter.   Tried with same style and brand 1m cable, worked fine.

Try Flash's solution, try different cables.

Had no issues with Anker cables, it maybe the fact the radio just can't supply enough current, add in the losses in the cables and connectors and you have issues

2 USB plugs, 1 for power (run off the aux socket) and the other for data, that would allow a higher current charge and better stability - just an idea

It may well do that but at the expense of spaghetti wiring.

I had power issues with an Amazon Firestick.  Using 2xUSB ports on the TV fixed it.

You could mod the port/cable, I have a mk4 USB port here but i don't want to hijack the thread Aygo forum

Thanks. I am going in for the first service tomorrow, so was also planning to bug those folks to tell me how to reboot the dash.

Will try this before the trip.

Tried that, works like a charm. The dealer had zero clue on how to do it though. They were like, "no idea if there's anything like that".

It actually comes up with a proper message and button to press to trigger the reboot.
Now I less worried about the system crashing and leaving me in a tizzy.
