Yaris Cross hybrid 2022 lights coming on in broad daylight

Hi All maybe making a mole hill out off a mountain but im getting really peeved off with the main lights coming on during daylight hours,

sometime i can switch to side lights and back to auto and they switch off but other times they just stay on ,is there any settings that can turn the sensor off

via the service mode, there is a control via the engine settings this has helped but not fully i have daylight runing lights but for the main lights to come on when its not necessary

is driving me up the wall ,what i find annoying is that this is a hybrid vehicle and you want to conserve as much Battery power as possible any help Thanks

please note i understand that the lights will come on near dusk but today for example it was still full daylight and the  lights would not switch off

Which infotainment is this? My Aygo X with the 8" infotainment has a menu that has a slider for the sensitivity of the lights, but I have it set to the most sensitive setting and the "earliest" they come on is around sun setting if driving a road that is surrounded by tall trees and it is indeed a bit darker, but probably still not truely needed yet.

My Yaris does the same, if it’s a little bit dull at all  on comes the headlights. It’s a safety thing but it’s far too sensitive. I spoke with my dealership and they said they couldn’t do anything, so I just manually switch off the headlights on the switch lever. And at the end of the journey it will beep and you have to switch off the parking light manually.😡

That’s annoying but what is even more annoying is that there is no option to turn all lights off like previous models that had 0 on the switch. 😐

I know it wasn't the solution, but I was going to suggest just turning the lights off completely.

What you write there Tony is a silly backward step.

There's more and more of this so-called progress taking away the control from the driver. It really is getting daft.

Err, no.  There are times I want my lights turned right off and I can’t.  Each to his own.

Do the auto lights come on if it’s raining and the wipers are also on ( auto) ?

<warning, rant!>

I have the same problem - The problem is the sensor is looking up, so if I drive underneath anything - A gantry, overpass, walkway, trees, particularly dark cloud, particularly large pigeon etc., it doesn't matter how bright the day is, the car will be like "Oh, it's dark! Better turn on my nuclear sunfire-bright LEDs!"

Just wait 'til it gets to autumn/winter - Around dusk the light level is right on the edge of when it switches, and the car is never sure what to be on, so any slight change in light (e.g. from clouds, lamp posts etc.) will keep making it flop between lights on and lights off.

And as Tony says, the stalk doesn't have an Off setting for totally asinine reasons no doubt.

The worst thing is there *IS* a stalk with an Off setting - It's in the manual! I don't know what Mk4 Yaris it comes with, as neither the Euro, UK or Irish-spec seems to have it, but the manual clearly shows two types of stalk, the only difference being one has an O (for Off) setting below the Auto, sidelights and main beam settings.

It annoys me, but I just stopped caring TBH - After being blinded by everyone else's DRLs and beams for years, I just let mine flash other drivers as it wants to - I can't really do anything about it and it's not my problem anyway.

If I'm feeling nice I'll switch to sidelights, but I've then forgotten to turn on the beams and been driving around without my dippeds on (You really can't tell here because all the street lights are LED now, and between that and everyone else's eye-searing LED lights it's impossible to tell if your own are on just by looking out the front!), and only realized when I hit the motorway!

So usually I just let it do what the heck it likes since there's nothing I can really do about it, and it's not my problem anyway, so why stress?

And no, the lights do not come on automatically if it is raining, unless it is also dark enough for the sensor to notice. I usually switch to sidelights manually when it's raining, just to get the rear lights on.

You should try the Honda Jazz I used to have it had a off position on the stalk but it was spring loaded to flip back to auto when you let go! (Only turned them off when handbrake was on)
It used to annoy me when the lights came on in daylight but now I just let it do what it wants.

Err, that's what I alluded to. No way to turn lights off completely is daft.

Try reading what Tony wrote and what I wrote in reference to what he wrote.

Do you try and nit pick or contradict for the sake of it?

Each to his own indeed.

If the ambient light is strong enough to not trigger the light sensor, if you start the car and leave it in P all lights ( including DRL ) are off even if you've set the stalk to Auto.

After you move the gear lever once from P at least DRLs are always on until you stop the car.

The stalk with the off function hurm, it's the same part as the corolla (the mk4 shares a lot with the rolla)

As posted 2 years ago

Standard stalk w/ Front fogs

84329-33090

Standard stalk w/o Front fogs

84329-02020

Nothing on the euro spec cars, JDM has the wipers left and indicators right

There’s a better way of telling me I misinterpreted your post but I guess you’re having a bad day.  I read it again and it looks like you are telling Tony his idea of an “off” position is a silly backward step.  NOT nit picking, simple misunderstanding.

Again thanks for the replies

At last i have had some success not what i wanted but something is better than nothing first issue which i still have not achieved is being able to remove the sensor from its position to be able to look at  plug etc i could not remove it,almost but not enough ,it was suggested by Toyota that you go in via the glove box but there is almost no  room due to aircon pipes etc i could not find a way to reach up and release the sensor unit. (if anyone can let us know)

There are a couple off youtube clips that tell you to turn the ignition on then flip the light switch to side light position then turn ignition off, then pull the high beam lever to high and hold it in this position and at the same time rotate the side light switch to activate the high and low sensitivity, but i could not get this to work, maybe on some country versions it works but not in nz, unless i was doing it the wrong way?

The myyariscross fix DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK when i was trying to remove the sensor i inadvertently removed the top cover off the sensor exposing the gel and electronics of the sensor fortunately i did not damage the electronics 😟but in the process did damage one clip edge of the cover, the clip edge is on the left and right side off the sensor east west direction if i had been able to remove the complete sensor this would not have happened  .

The next test was to confirm if the original cover was an issue and sure enough when i placed it back on the sensor the lights came on,so for the modification using something that would replace the original sensor cover i found that the clear top off a small throat spray bottle that you can get from a health shop worked a real treat ,also protecting the sensor.and sure enough when placed over the sensor the lights did not come on,my good test for this was in a carport where i did not have full light on the front windscreen, then i went out for a drive and this also was successful as the lights cames more close to dusk.

Oh yes if i had damaged the sensor it will cost you over four hundred dollars nz for a replacement or try to get one via car wreckers or eBay.

please excuse any spelling errors etc

please see photos and yes some off us learn the hard way😂

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All seems from the number off views that im not the only one who maybe a bit annoyed they cant disengage the auto light  control , at this time the only way to deactivate the auto light is to unplug the sensor ,this then makes the auto mode to an off mode and by turning the switch maually turns the light on and off when required, please see photos if you want to deactivate the sensor do this with extreme care due to the fact that there is an airbag tether behind the plastic cover please see photos attached also note for us diys that the plastic white clip that i have encircled has to be removed and placed in the plastic cover before being put back in place there are buttons either side that you press to release the clip from the metal pillar.

If anyone comes up with a easier solution please comment as it seem at some stage you were able to change the sensitivity off the sensor but at this time with the yaris

there is know info or solution available.

Be careful.  As far as I am aware, as well as controlling the auto lights the sunlight sensor also has an input to to the auto climate control.

I used to find it irritating when the lights came on when I drove into the garage or under overhanging trees or a bridge but now I have adopted a more relaxed attitude to the auto features of the car that you can't do much about, I recommend it.

Have a nice day everyone, and tomorrow and the next day, just relax and chill out.

Aye, I think pretty much any new car you buy now has no full off switch for the lights.

Mine turn on at the exact same place at a set of lights where there are thick over-hanging trees, then go off again as soon as I get round the corner.

Remember your lights are all led so that probably uses 0.00000000000000001 of a volt extra.

The first car I ever had with auto lights was my 2004 Clio 172.

I had a right strop at first and went through this complicated procedure to turn them off - no simple switch then.

Then I had a word with myself and just put it back and left it. 🤣

While I do find it annoying, it's not annoying enough for me to actually do something about it

I figure since everyone routinely dazzles me with their LEDs and HIDs, and since this isn't my problem,

Really the only time it really bugs me is if I'm parked up in low-light/night, as I can't go into 'stealth mode' - the lights come on as soon as the car is powered up. In the day time I can turn the car on and the DRLs won't turn on until I shift it out of Park, so I can sit and listen to music or whatever without drawing attention. Not so at night!
