Hi, I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla with a service plan which has one service in November left to go on it. I’m not happy with our dealership and will not be renewing with them. We have a local garage who are honest and do good work and am thinking of using them in the future. However, as my vehicle still has two years warranty left I need to be mindful of the service conditions required by Toyota so as to maintain the warranty. I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me what these conditions are and are garages likely to stick to them, or anything else that I need to be aware of.

I noticed too that a Hybrid check is included with the Toyota service and presumably I would need to go to Toyota for this as a separate service if I use a local garage. My question is regarding this, is it part of the service requirements?

Basically under Block Exemption any VAT registered garage can service the car and maintain the new car warranty as long as the manufacturer's service intervals are followed and equivalent quality parts are used. This only applies to the new car warranty period.

Whether the garage you choose, services the car correctly and uses equivalent quality of parts is down to you to ensure.

As Toyota uses electronic service records, independent garages won't have access to these - so, in the event of a warranty claim, the onus will be on you to maintain adequate proof of correct servicing and whether parts used are of equivalent quality to Toyota's.

Any warranty or recall work will still need to be done by a Toyota dealer.

Hi Mike, and thanks for your quick response.

Regarding parts, am I to understand then that genuine Toyota parts is not a requirement?

Is there another Toyota dealer that you could use if you are unhappy with this one . 👍

I’m sure you’re local independent will do a Stirling job, but you know what’s going to happen, something will go wrong, ( Sod’s Law) that the indie, won’t be able to fix, and it will be expensive, Toyota will do all it can to avoid doing the repair, that would normally be covered, at its own cost, if it were me, I’d try another Toyota dealer as has been suggested…

Yes there is, I have sent off an inquiry. This time round I will be looking for a national plan so I can choose which dealership I can go to rather than being stuck as I am now. Not sure if it will be more expensive though🫤

Yes Alan, I tend to agree, and aware of these pitfalls

Not Toyota, but a friend had his Hyundai serviced at an independent garage.  When the engine went, Hyundai were very difficult.  They started with doing an analysis of the oil in the sump to make sure it was the correct stuff.  Then went through every invoice.  They were very reluctant to accept the right oil and filter had been used each service.

In the end, they paid.  But the vehicle was off road for about 5 months whilst they were wrangling.  Then two weeks for the repair.

On plans,  my first was Toyota on an ABA basis.   My current one is only AB.  I think it is the garage on.

As for getting them to respond to an email ZILCH.

Thanks for sharing that...I've now decided to stick with Toyota but with a better dealership

Major and minor service, they alternate.  I forget which is which though.

Thanks, I wasn't sure either. I was worried karaoke was a new warranty stipulation and you'd have to sing such classics as Garage Queen, Waterlogged, SOS-DCM or Money-Money-Money, to claim on the warranty
