HI, hope someone can give me some advice re the following. In Dec my car had its 2nd annual service and I was assured that the key fob Battery had been replaced, prior to this I had the impression that I needed to be closer to the car than usual for the remote to work.

At the end of Jan I had the same problem again and assumed that the Battery had not been changed at the service so replaced it myself. All was well for a few weeks and then again I felt I needed to be closer to the car for the remote to work. Thought maybe had a duff Battery so replaced it again.

In late march early april same thing happened, battery replaced again.

In May battery again replaced.

Today the car unlocked normally but when I tried to start it I had a message on the screen saying "key not detected", strange as the key was in the usual place, the coffee cup holder near the gear shift. Tried again with same result. Tried a third time and this time message said to hold key next to start button, did this and it worked.

I suspect the key is faulty as my wife has the spare and she has not had any problems.

Is the key covered under warranty and how would I prove that the problem exists, can Toyota test a key to see where the battery drain is coming from.

Sorry this is so long winded.

Many thanks in advance.

According to terms and conditions of the warranty remote controls in keys are covered under the Electrical section.👍

Another possibility for key fob issues, Battery drain etc is if you keep you key fob in pocket where can be constant squished and one or more buttons pressed, the key will become active, keep sending signals and drain your Battery. Also if you keep the fib close or directly over credit cards or other subjects with chip inside can cause problems. Something to check and to make sure you have the right answers when visiting the dealer. Good luck 👍

On a previous car a Volvo XC60 one of my key fobs had the same problem after about 3 years.

It was around £180 to have it replaced and reprogrammed by the dealer, but I just used the spare fob until I changed the car 🙂

- UPDATE -

Phoned the dealers early today and they said come over and we will look at it for you. After listening to what I had to say and doing some tests, they agreed that the FOB was probably faulty. They tested the 12v Battery and said it was OK and said that the Battery in the FOB was also fully charged. They have said that they will contact Toyota on Monday re a warranty claim. I am very pleased with this Dealership, they alway listen to what is said and are willing to check things out. I have read some bad reports on this forum regarding Dealerships, but I think Listers of Boston are  very good. (No I dont work for them).
