Clutch problems

Hi everybody,

After a visit to a mechanic my car is doing weird things! When I press the brake for example while I am at a traffic light and after I press the gas the car is not moving forward. Also when I press the brake to slow down the car is making cracking noises.

I have a Toyota Aygo (automatic - 2008) I have never had any issues with the car but I went to the mechanic to change the oil filter and after that started a nightmare.

At the beginning he told me that its better to do service for the car and to check if there are any other problems and I told him ok.

Later on he told me that my rear brake on the wheel is destroyed and it needs to be replaced. I told him to replace it.

He called and told me that the car is ready and I can come to pick it.

I went there and I took the car and when I started the engine and pressed the gas pedal the car didn't move. I went back to him and he told me he will fix it. After 1 hour he told me that it is fine and I can go. I was going home with the car and it stopped at the roundabout and I was unable to move. After that, I called the insurance company and they took the car to the mechanical platform.

The mechanic told me that the clutch motor and the clutch itself must be replaced. He replaced only the clutch motor and we agreed that later on we will replace the clutch.

At the beginning it seems that he has solved the problem but now I have the same problem again. When the car is stopped or in neutral and I press the gas pedal it won't move. So in order to move I have to start / stop the car motor multiple times and change the gears on the gearbox in order to be able to move.

Did anyone had any similar problems?

Do you think that the problem is because of the clutch?

Thanks!

Vera

To be honest it sounds like you need to find a better mechanic...

Always puts things in a more right perspective : how many miles does your Aygo have.
You own it from new or since how many miles ?

Well, let's look at this way, the issue occurred after the rear brakes were touched

As an (un)educated guess.................

A. The brakes have not been cleaned/changed or rebuilt correctly

B. The handbrake was adjusted and not set back to standard when the brakes were done

when you apply the handbrake, how many clicks can you feel ?

A simple check is to get the rear wheel off the ground with the front wheels chocked, handbrake off and see if the will turns by hand, repeat on the other side

I bought a used car (it had 222 343 miles) and now it has around 231.026 miles.

I am not sure when and if the clutch was replaced before because the car was used. I am using it for the last 1,5 years and I didn't had any issues up until now. I wanted to change only the oil filter and after the mechanic told me about the brakes and the clutch.

For sure the clutch may be damaged but the question is how it broke at the same time when I took it to the mechanic. It cannot be coincidence.

When I slow down the speed by pressing the brake pedal the car makes creaky noise.

Another question that I have is when I start the engine for example in the morning it doesn't allow me to go to the front or reverse when I press the gas pedal and when I am stopped on the traffic light it doesn't move front. I have to start/stop the car engine multiple times and to change the gears to be able to move. It is the clutch or something else?

I am not sure if the problem is the clutch or the breaks.

I am concerned about the fact that when I start the engine for example in the morning it doesn't allow me to go to the front or reverse when I press the gas pedal and when I am stopped on the traffic light it doesn't move front. Well, if the rear brakes are binding in a manual car, the car will stall with an MMT it will drop its self in N to try and protect the clutch yes if you do it too much it will cook the clutch, MMT clutch will last 40-70k miles depending on its use

how many clicks to put the handbrake on ?

Wouldn't it try / start to go and move a bit (on the tyres / upward) until it senses that the breaks are holding the car back ? After which the car stops making the effort to move.. ?
Something Vera would feel happening.

I was thinking about the gearbox automatic parts and clutch but maybe I am thinking wrong.

Honestly and obviously, the mileage is a bit of an ouwch. Anything can go wrong at 222.000 miles. Would be a little bit so also for a 2008 with 89000 miles for example, but still there's a difference.

If you lost your trust in the old garage for reasons that sound valid to me, why not go to an other one and have him test the car out to make an intelligent estimate of what it's gonna cost to make the car driveable.
If you have someone in your area that specialises a bit in the 107 / AYGO / C1 , even better.

For all intents, it's a manual gearbox it just uses actuators for the clutch and selector

If the car was working before had the rear brake "Done" it can only be the rear brakes that are the issue, the fact you had to wait an hour for him to fix the issue first time is a red flag something is not right, either wrong parts or incorrect assembly

As i said above, make sure you can turn the rear wheels by hand

I tried to pull the handbrake and I hear one click at the end only when is fully up

Still I haven't figured it out how to check my rear wheels.

Chock the front wheels

jack up the car on one side (just infront of the rear wheel)

hand brake off

the rear wheel should spin by hand

Handbrake clicks - release the handbrake, pull it up without pushing in the button and counting the clicks

if it's really on 1 click, the handbrake is well out of adjustment what is a simple fix

I'm sure you have someone who can help you
