Look at the pivot point within the drum cable operated its on the back of one of brake shoes.

Dont feel like stripping it out just try a drop or two of oil on pin only it wont hert to put a drop on the cable end where it comes into brake drum.

Fully strip and clean, pay special attention to the self adjuster and make sure the handbrake lever if free

IMHO good chance wheel cylinder is sticking or seized at least one side of cylinder and or handbrake cable seizing

I'm guessing your mot mentions which side to look at ?

You need to release the latch on the self-adjuster to be able to back the brake shoes off.

Is the problem only on one side? In which case the problem is most likely in one of the components in the drum on that side. Maybe, the cable sticking on that side? If both sides are sticking then try slacking off the balance adjuster inside the car.

The rear brakes on the Aygo can be a faff to get right. The simplest advice I can give is to strip them down, take the springs and brake shoes off. Clean everything, make sure it all moves as it should. Check that the brake cylinder pistons moves freely and easily. Do the hand brake cables move freely and with equal ease? Reassemble, test, rinse, repeat...

The good thing about these is the ubiquity of the cars, which means you can get hold of new parts easily and for not that much money. This means you can put new components in there without ruining your bank account. That said, don't cut too many corners. I bought new, cheap self adjusters and they just don't work. Get Bosch (OEM) or Toyota.
