This is probably a silly question but it is my first automatic car, there is a button on the gear stick in my Aygo X car, do you need to press it every time you shift gears to D or P or R or is it only when you shift to R? Sorry if it obvious

I've always assumed the stick wont move at all unless you hold that button, but tbh Ive probably never really tried to move it without it cos it's kinda how they always work. Not gonna go out to test right now, but im gonna go with always press the button down when changing gear "modes".

Most if not all auto cars have this button.  Mine does not move without pressing it.  I assume it's a safety feature.

All my previous automatic cars over the past 30 years have had a button.

It's a safety interlock, it stops you accidentally knocking it in/out of gear - the last thing you want is to be able to knock into R while doing 50mph

yeah I just press it when I'm wanting to move the shifter to D or R etc. Its a safety thing as I've found I don't need to press the brake when starting the engine when its stopped in P position.
