Displays randomely switching to 'Dark Mode'

My only gripe so far about the bz4x is it randomely switches the displays to 'dark mode' and equally randomely switches back to normal. It happens with my phone (Samsung) and my partners phone (iPhone 14) it happens if they are plugged in to the USB port directly or if l use mine with the Carsifi dongle. Nothing l can do will make it switch back to 'normal' view. It's all very random and it can go for days without it happening. Everything (including the car) is at latest software levels.

Is this a car problem or a phone problem? Given that it happens with both Apple & Android then it would point the finger at the car but not really sure.

Somewhat frustrated with this.

Do the headlights come on at the same time?

I don't have a bZ4X and don't use AA/ACP but the display in my RAV4 will occasionally switch to 'night mode' (and typically the headlights come on) when the light levels drop momentarily and the system decrees that normal 'day mode' would be too bright for me ... ?

I guess for you the question is whether the 'mode' is dictated by the 'phone or the car ... and the car seems the more likely. The acid test would be to use the built-in navigation (no 'phone) and see what happens then.

Yes i agree, sounds like the light levels outside dropping, and the display switching to night mode to stop glare in cabin. Pretty sure I've noticed in settings that you can toggle this off

I’ve seen this happen with CarPlay momentarily when driving, for example, under a bridge. Which makes sense. It was a little twitchier in an older version of iOS when I had a different car: if I hit the wrong motorway at the wrong speed, the overhead lights could strobe the daylight screen on and off repeatedly, which was very distracting to say the least.

On Thursday l was driving early evening - about 7pm and there was a long row of trees with regular shade/sun intervals; the display was constantly swapping between dark and normal mode - it was about a mile and drove me nuts. I need to play around with the display settings as suggested by Craig. I may end up turning it off (if l can). I recall reading somewhere it was something related to Android Auto and wasn't specific to Toyota but l can't find the reference now. My partner uses Apple and she said it's done it a few times; flicks in to dark mode but won't immediately change back to normal mode until it feels like it.

I have seen this happening when driving under a bridge using Apple Carplay. BZ4X FWD.
