Avensis T22 water leaking into boot

Hello, I have a problem with water leaking into the boot of my Avensis T22, first generation pre facelift estate. There seems to be water in the left part under the boot carpet where the jack is, and also in the spare wheel well. Water seems to be leaking through the "breathing" holes between the rear bumper and the spare wheel well, but the water obviously does not enter the car there. Does anyone have any idea where is the leak most likely to be?

Also, there seem to be no obvious signs of water anywhere else in the cabin, like on the "ceiling" or on the boot lid.

Thanks

Hey, I've a similar problem. Same side, rear light plastic has a foam which is glued onto the chassis and upon closer check I've noticed that is not sealing it properly.
I just cleaned the foam and without applying new glue or whatever substance that was put on it put it all bac, tightened the screws back. For now it does not leak for my surprise...
Recently were quite heavy rain storms and found no water in the trunk. And the plastic vent that is there has its rubber "fin" missing, despite that no water, just dust mostly comes through there, and bugs....

Might help You as well despite having different chassis type.

Thank you! The water is indeed leaking between the rear light and the chassis, into the car. I checked this by spraying water onto the rear light using a garden hose.

I've tried duct taping around the rear tail light now as a temporary fix, to see if the problem goes away. If that is the case, I'll remove the rear light and attempt to reseal it.

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

I have found out that the rear light foam gasket is most likely to be the problem. Can I buy that gasket online somewhere, without buying the rear light in its entirety?

Feels unnecesary to spend £80 for a rear light including shipping for a gasket that would easily fit in an envelope.

Regards

Hi there Joe,

You might be lucky and find an after market gasket on the likes of eBay or go to the main stealers which will be a silly price for something so simple.

Best option would be to do what those of us do with the older Aygo/C1 and 107's do, use a silicone sealer applied between the leaky surface of the gasket and either the bodywork (or the back of the light unit or both).Needs the light unit to be removed first though! Applied after cleaning all the dirt and debris off the surfaces will make a good seal and not cost a fortune to fix and you have the tube to hand still if you get other leaks.
