Hi guys, new to this forum stuff, but basically I've just been given my dad's old car as my first car, its a Toyota corolla 1.4 vvti, any tips on basics mods to increase power?

Yes, very simple. Give it to your brother and sister and get 2.0L Hybrid Corolla 198HP instead.   I meant, there is no reason to add more power in any Toyota, they are overbuilt for the power output they had and make it much more reliable than other brands.  The 1.4L is like our Microwave or Refrigerator, just keep running and running, nothing fancy.  The ECU in most modern Toyota, post 1990s are practically untunable. These 1.4 already has very efficient power with injectors (not carburator), Variable valve timing, not fixed with distributor and coils.  The only thing that may make it better is using Iridium plugs instead of standard Platinum.  i believe the original OEM standard spark plugs is already Denso Iridium that last 120k miles.

Just clean the throttle body, mass air flow sensor, and use a good cheap gasoline (cheaper=fresher) instead of expensive gas station that no one ever filled there (old fuel=bad).   I am sorry man, Corolla is  not Supra.  Just like Land cruiser is not Range Rover (broken all the time) and serves us as appliances that we can always rely on.
