Squeaky Brakes... 1WW Avensis

I changed my brake discs and pads last year (around March). Genuine Toyota *cough Bosch cough* discs - sourced from Toyota's online eBay store and genuine Toyota pads.

The brakes on before this weren't badly wore but squeaking on any long journey, I put this down to poor quality no name parts potentially poorly fitted and just used it as an excuse to buy genuine / do a job on the car...

But now I'm back to the same place, squeaking brakes when coming to a stop at traffic lights on long journeys when the car is well heated up / driven in.

I cleaned the callipers and contact points with a wire brush when fitting them. Used brake cleaner. I didn't use any copper grease etc as the advice was conflicting on that - but I could see signs of it on the parts I took off, so I don't think that would have made a difference realistically.

Checked them visually / with my hand yesterday. A little wore on the outside, slightly more on the inside of the front discs. Tiny ridge on the edges. Nothing too bad, no unbalance between sides. No burn marks or dark spots. Rears are the same, wore equally on both sides - even less wear but a slight feel of a ridge on the edges.

Is there really anything I can do about this or should I just live with it and keep an eye on them?

You can change again to a different peds supplier but, i wouldnt touch it. Unless they gave you fake genuine toyota peds.

Strip them down again, make sure you get every last bit of dust off the calipers and pads (it's the dust vibration that causes the noise) and reassemble.

p.s. I never use anything on the back of the pads or brake cleaner spray.  Just do it with a wire brush and don't waste your money.

You DID fit anti-squeal shims between the pads and caliper pistons did'nt you?

If not then a penny to a pound that is the cause of the squealing.

Good advice given, if me I will try that and if no positive changes I will just live with it. Next change will try another brand. I use blueprint discs with ebc ultimax pads on hybrid Auris and I am very happy with performance and overall. No noise, no dust, brake power is superb and long life too. But the car is different. , so no idea how they will do on Avensis for example.

I'll do this soon. No surprise about the dust it's quite heavy with brake dust on the front wheels week on week (maybe I'm bad at braking).  Any quality wire brushes you'd recommend? (even general size or style of one) as ours are all old and I think on the bigger side (not easy to get into the little details)

The official Toyota store on eBay is probably the last source that will send out fake parts. I used the link from Toyota's website to access it as well. I did stop using other unknown sellers / websites for 'genuine' parts because of the scare I had with that eHybrid website.

Can you send me a link to know exactly what you mean? Then I can confirm. I presumed that this is something that would have come with the genuine pads. I can't remember if they did, eBay isn't letting me look more than 1 year back in my messages, but something is telling me that when I asked Toyota told me the kit doesn't exist for my brakes.  My brakes are Bosch callipers / discs albeit came in a sealed Toyota box.. The pads are Toyota 'Optifit' which was what the eBay store advised when I asked.  Do all Avensis T27's come with the same braking system? Something tells me Bosch might have been the choice for the 1WW / 2WW engines only. Or maybe with this being a primarily Europe market designed model they all have Bosch?

If this is a part of my brake system that I just failed to buy,  I will order it - but can my Toyota dealer advise me on whether this exists for my car? Maybe there is an optional shim kit that doesn't work with the Bosch system? I'm not sure. I'd love to buy one and fit it (after cleaning it from dust) now - if that makes sense to do.

Shane,

The shims are actually thin metal plates the same shape as the back of the pads.

The would sit on the pads and be held on with small tabs that bend over the metal part of the pads.

Look on giggle and search for brake assemblies strip down diagrams.

I do not have any pictures myself.

So I've uploaded some pics from last year when I did this.  Is it inside the yellow dotted circles I've put on the first picture?  If so, I re-used these from before. I wire brushed them back to shiny when fitting back on.

Otherwise, maybe the silver partially covered parts of the back of each pad? (second pic)

Or the little bent shiny silver metal bits shown on the third pic?

Did you take pieces off from inside the yellow circles and clean the part of the caliper they sit in?

Those are the squealers, they let you know when your pads are getting low.

It seems you did a good job and correctly, the textar pads are possibly one of the best available plus in oem box so you should have no problems. 👍

@SB1500

Shane, the 2nd picture shows the shims that I mentioned.

I am used to seeing the shims cover all the back of all of the pads.

Maybe things have changed since I stopped being a mechanic back in 2003.

Yes, I did take these out and give them a quick brushing with a wire brush. They weren't spotless but they were mostly clean. Maybe it wasn't enough though?

That's great! When I looked as well, I thought they only covered half, but looking closer I think it is one full size covered piece, but one half is painted black with the text on it (strange design decision!). But I'm glad I wasn't missing any obvious part to consider it a full and proper job!

Thanks!  So Toyota uses TEXTAR.  I wonder if this is what comes from new or if OEM Boxes can come with a number of different manufacturers for things like this? (e.g. fast moving, constant demand, consumable parts like brake pads)

Not just Textar.  In the little box, just above the word Bosch, it says Pagid.

As you can see, that is a genuine Toyota, Bosch, Pagid pad.

That's brilliant hahahaha

So I take it that's a Pagid pad, with Bosch supplying the backing plate part?!

In fairness, the discs I got from the Toyota eBay store, in sealed genuine Toyota striped boxes, had 'BOSCH' etched on the side edges of the discs... was a little disappointed, but if it's good enough for Toyota then it'll be good enough for me.

I'd probably rather that actually, as I tried finding brakes for my uncle's Mazda 6 Tourer - appears to be Akebono in that case, but impossible to find genuine Akebono (non Mazda branded) parts online / from reputable sellers.   At least we could theoretically opt for those brands that work with Toyota without the genuine stamp and save without sacrificing too much in the way if quality (if anything)

Don’t worry about parts branding as long as you avoid some well known poor quality aftermarket names you will be alright. There is unwritten rule that the original parts bought from the dealer in originally package are higher quality than branded equivalent and that also make sense, for example a Denso branded water pump vs Toyota boxed water pump made by Denso.  Although I never run into trouble with branded aftermarket parts that I have used, only with aftermarket that I was warned but even so I decided to try, and these are Optimal and Febest. Topran for vag cars too.

Good quality aftermarket are: Blueprint, Febi, First line, SKF for bearings. Hengst or Mahle/ Knecht for filters, Bosch are good too, Pagid, ATE, EBC,

Your car because it’s a BMW powered may have different parts all around.
My car  English built and engine was made in UK has a lots of European parts  but also Japanese too, the brakes particularly are Advics front and Akebono rear. Never used original Toyota parts and I had already replaced 3 times , the reason was rust issues and not a wearing down to minimum., but it’s a hybrid and we have rainy days plus a lots of salt during winter which kills the cars.
