MM17 in my 20 Excel is better than the MM19 in my 21 Design

The MM17 has the Gracenote, it has song list where the MM19 didn't.

The sound itself seems better, richer, or is that the Speakers?

Does your Excel have JBL? That could explain a difference in sound quality ...

I don't know, I thought JBL meant a woofer in the boot but it doesn't have that.

I wish there was a way to look up what a car came with.

I think that it does - so it probably isn't that then. It also means having upgraded and more Speakers in the car and the magic letters JBL on the media system.

I have the JBL upgrade in my 2020 Excel - it sounds fine. My wife's 2021 C-HR (Excel) doesn't have JBL - and it sounds just as fine!
