Hi all.

I'm a bit unsure if I should contact my dealer. Or just let the car be like it is.

We have a Corolla cross hybrid. It has 12.000 km on the clock.

Some times, if I start the car. And the combustion engine starts. The car will shift pretty hard into reverse. Sometimes it doesn't. If the combustion engine stays shut. You can't feel the shift at all.

Any of you guys who has more experience with hybrids who knows if it's normal. Or something I should get the dealer to look at?

Kindly

Hi,

all Toyota hybrids shift with loud bang into reverse  if you had managed  to do so exactly when the engine is starting. Most other scenarios should be smooth and easy. Sometimes  it depend how and where you had parked the shift can be more difficult to move, that’s also ok. Another time shifting between gears P, R N D you can notice like jolts and this is also normal.
Don’t worry. These cars rarely fail or have any issues especially drivetrain.

It happens when the car is started and says ready. And the combustion engine have run 2-3 seconds before I put it in reverse.

Important to double check and make sure that you press on the brake firmly before moving the shifter, but again, most likely it’s normal. If unsure you can record a video and share then we can confirm. If we note anything abnormal then you can book a dealer visit and see why they will say. 👍

What would cause that? There is no reverse gear to shift into in hybrids - the car just runs the electric motor backwards!

My hybrid does have a “loud bang” shifting into reverse so i dispute “all hybrids”

Did you mean "doesn't have a loud bang", as you seem to be disputing while agreeing with him

Well.. if experience an occasional hard shift to reverse. Not a loud bang

I have the same issue. I've got into a habit of doing this:

If, when parking, the car moves even a little bit, I shift into reverse and then back into park (this is with auto parking brake enabled). Then it alleviates the issue.

If,  however, the car is charging the main Battery when i park,  all bets are off, unless I bother to wait for it to stop charging.

We've now had 4 hybrids, 2 rav, 2 yaris, and none of them have gone hard jnto reverse.

All Toyota hybrids no exception. Those with cable operated gear shifter like Yaris and Corolla, rav4 etc can be even worse. The loud bang happens only if you hit the exact moment reversed while the engine starts and you will see for yourself., not a nice feeling. There are various scenarios when you can feel jolts and bangs and they are normal for these cars. You need more practice and experimenting. Nothings wrong with the transmission or engine, it’s just how everything works and why there is a clutch between both engine and mg1. Another time when these can happen is if you disengage parking brake , park on a slope and let the weight of the car rest on the parking pole. Then after switching from P to R or D will result a hard and loud shifting. , all cars from Prius to Highlander.
The OP states that when the engine is running the switch into R is louder and harder than if the engine is off and this is absolutely normal because when the engine is running it is also charging the Battery and it is working under load while you disengage the parking pole , what happens is very similar to the example with car parked on the slope without parking brake on. 👍

I find it helps if you not so eager to move off I normally move off in reverse first but just for about 100 or 200 mm 4 to 8 inches then forward.

OK so I also used to experience a movement when shifting from P to D or R.

It turns out its to do with how you park.

So I now normally stop the car shift into neutral while brake pedal pressed then engage the E Brake and let go of the brake pedal.

After that I shift into P.

If I directly parked the car by putting into P there always used to be a ***** but doing the above method it doesn't do that anymore.

I watched a youtube video on automatics and how to park safely as I always had a manual before and that was the recommended way to park as I think shifting directly onto P puts pressure on the gears or something.

I dont know much on how this all works but following the above steps have stopped the Jerky movement for me when moving off.
