Yaris Mk3 side / DRL 580 W21/5 bulbs change to LED ?

My Yaris uses 580 W21/5 incandescent bulbs for side/DRL and side/stop lights as standard.

I replaced all 4 on 31/12/22 and one of the front side/DRL bulbs has just popped a week after my MOT.  While the bulbs are only £3 a go at Halfords I will return the blown bulb to them for a replacement but I do wonder if I could replace the incandescent bulbs front and back with a 580 W21/5 LED bulb.

I don't think I have bulb failure warnings on the dash as nothing flashed up when this bulb blew.  Might and LED bulb work or not ?

You can change to led if you find suitable bulbs but these is illegal in uk. Also non led designed lights fitted with led bulbs does not provide better or more light but just more intense and all they do is to blind oncoming vehicles and other road users. If you are looking for longer life bulbs on standard fitting then your best option is to go for Osram 7515-02B Original Equipment W21/5W bulbs in a twin blister pack - Transparent https://amzn.eu/d/4TLmqNO

avoid Halfords own brand bulbs.

I just go with original type but from a well known MFG.

Sometimes LED bulbs dont like the electronic noise generated in a car envirement thats was not designed for that type of bulb replacment.

Thanks.

The  placement of these are in the side light / DRL unit so not likely to blind oncoming cars.

I don't see a problem with single LED side lights.. Far less bright than many modern car DRLs.

Had a Mini behind me on Friday. Gosh those DRLs were bright!

I have seen tons of older cars with led’s bulbs conversions and really it doe’s even look good imo. Again will depend on what led are installed, brand, colour temperature etc. Many cars that have them on number plates in the night they make no light going into number plate but straight point into the ground, some side bulbs and drl are ok. You can always try and see if you like it.

On the off-road situation, attempted to swap the DRL from the original dual filament bulb (W3x16q) to the SRAM 9705CW LED, however it did not function.

Do you have a similar situation?

I think with the standard bulb type DRL headlights fitted to the late 2014 (64) till 2020 (20) Yaris Mk3, they are not going to work well with LED capless wedge type bulbs, as the design of the DRL light housing is reliant on the bulb filament reflecting off the mirrored surface surrounding it in the headlight unit, and casting a bright light straight forwards. LED bulbs tend to not emit light in all directions particularly well unless they have improved since I last tried doing it many years ago. It resulted in poor illumination.

Some LED bulbs that have wedge bases (such as the fitting in the headlight of the 64 reg onwards Yaris requires) tend to be polarity sensitive, and will only work in one direction, so if they wont come on when the car engine is switched on and the handbrake released, then maybe try removing the bulb from the socket, turn it round through 180 degrees and re-insert it. Note that the DRL's wont turn on even when the engine is started until the hand brake is released.

Thank you for your sharing. I've been tested and worked it.
