Thinking of buying an Auris

I have a Toyota Corolla 2006 thinking of changing to Auris petrol up to 2012 model. Is Auris as reliable as my Corolla?

Personally I think the old Corolla has better build quality and just feels more solid, but the Auris is a decent car still. Is as reliable as any Toyota.

Any particular reason you want to change?

If you are after maximum reliability, the hybrid is the one to get, but also the most expensive!

They are good cars but engine choices can be tricky. 1.33 is small for the car and some are oil burners. 1.6 is good size but some has vvti controller issues expensive fix, 1.4 diesel are good but diesels aren’t favourite these days , perhaps the hybrid is the best .

Just that my car is nearly 17 years and I wanted a newer Toyota so thought what car can I get that is not a hybrid.

With the budget you have you can buy a 1.6 from 2010-2012, the higher year the better. Although this is still an old car and you have to check everything before you buy or be ready to spent some money for service and repairs.
Not sure really if your Corolla has no rust and it’s mechanically sound if there is any point to upgrade to Auris only few years newer. Perhaps save some more money, wait the market to stabilise as currently it’s unreal and then buy  a brand new or up to 5 years old. That’s what I am planning to do.

Any Auris gasoline engines are reliable as long as we maintain it well. The hybrid is also reliable as long as the oil consumption is controllable, clean the EGR regularly, and never get overheated.  In my opinion, older Corolla engines are simpler and more reliable without Valvematic nor direct injections (Avensis).  I would rather skipped the Auris 2010-2014, and get 2015 or newer hybrid instead.  Better yet, get a Corolla 2019 or newer and Toyota perfected the 1.8L hybrid in the 4th generation hybrid.

I can confirm. As reliability goes, my 16 year old Auris so far has proven to be very reliable like an older Corolla. However, build quality suffers on the Auris. Plasticky rattles are an annoyance you will have to put up with if you go Auris. The older Corolla is way better built. The Auris is more modern, has slightly better technology and better looking design, though.

Does it need the corolla size, otherwise yaris MK3 is an option. The market is not good for used car buyer, I normally buy used, this time I had to buy new as one year old is same price as new.

I had bought used cars from 15 years old to as new as 4 years old.  From economical point of view, 4-6 years old are the sweet spot.   We get practically a new car but almost nothing need repair for the next 4-5 years.

The worse one was a 7 years old Nissan Altima that has all kind of problems that I had to fixed in the 1st year ownerships. Head gaskets, catalytic converter (under warranty), all shocks and struts, 2 out of 4 engine mounts, alternator, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, and it still burning oil 1L every 1000 miles.

My 06 Prius was fine until it need catalytic converter ($2000) at around 200k miles/10 years, and then AC evaporator (cost $1500), and finally the hybrid Battery from hot FL weather ($800 used). I sold it for $3000, not a total lost after the Battery replacement. But it seems like problems come at around 170k miles because it started consuming oil 1L per 10k miles.

The best used car I ever had is my Auris TS 2015 (facelift). I bought it at around 55k miles in September 2019 miles and now is almost 95k miles. So far, only the front brake had been replaced (rotor rusty) with a new pads for total of $100.  I can sell it more than I bought it even after 4 years 40k miles later.

My Sienna 04 are running fine even after 14y old/200k+ miles. Only the dashboard cracked (free replacement) and typical Sienna problems (left control arms, door lock actuators ($5 fixed), and rear shocks ($120), valve cover gaskets ($300), and xenon bulbs ($100).  it consumes no oil at all with 5k miles/6 months interval.

So, in short, gets the less problematic models/year, 4-6 years old, well maintained.

Thanks.
If you don’t want to go hybrid, although Toyota hybrids are the best cars currently available that run on petrol, you can get a used Corolla from 2019 with 1.2 turbo engine and manual transmission. You gonna need £14000 upward  but you are getting a newer car still under manufacturer warranty and then service the car within official dealer network and you can have extended warranty up to 10 years or 100k miles, this is something that makes a difference imo.
Otherwise up to £5000 you can have an Auris  2010-2012 with any engine even a high mileage hybrid but I don’t know if this car will be any better than what you have at the moment. If you stretch a bit more like £8000 + you maybe able to find Auris from 2015 with 1.6 or 1.2t petrol engines.
It’s all up to you as you know your personal circumstances the best.
A non hybrid Yaris mk3 also not bad idea.

Honestly I am not saving for a car and I have no plans to change mine at least until completely dies and becomes uneconomical to repair.
I really like it and enjoy driving it as much as I did on day one and I don’t see a reason to buy a new one. Otherwise a replacement will be a Corolla hybrid excel, something that went up in the sky as price tag.

I still can't believe how good condition you've kept that despite the high mileage and high usage. Toyota should give you a prize or something!

I barely got my Mk1 past 100k and it really looked it!

Thanks,
they give stickers.
I need to get one more before the car retires if possible, that’s my hope, then will see. Btw after a long break, today I have opened the filler cap for a first time since 18th  May to fill up some petrol, how nice is to be back on the road, and the car drives so good. I don’t know why but every time I have some break and not driving for while the car feels better afterwards 😂👍

Hello Tony, yes it's remarkable the condition that you have kept your car in.

So how long is it now since your new hip?

Are you fully mobile now?

Thanks for asking Paul, that is very kind.
Today is the 6th week since the replacement and I am doing very well.
I can walk normally, get in and out of the car without any problems., I even washed twice already, waterless way, just wipe it off after the rain 🫢
I would say I am recovering alright. I do follow the physio strictly and I do all the exercises and keep walking everyday for around 2-3 miles.
It is nice to see how things are positively progressing by the day, perhaps there is a bit more to work on but overall it’s all good so far.
Cheers
