2.2 diesel reliability

Is the 2.2 really as reliable as they're claimed. I've not found anything bad about them online?!

I've had three that fell into that period and all of them proved to be totally reliable.

If you keep adding coolant, they will work well for a long time. It is a Toyota engine... But, you have to keep adding coolant... And if you buy one that is already on its last legs, well... I would stay away, but you know best.

Other than that it is powerful, very smooth running engine. It is a Lexus engine, so it is very refined. BMW engines of the same age are still better, when it comes to performance and efficiency. However, the 2.2 is a very nice engine to use.

Again, nowadays I would stay away from them, but as always it is up to you.

I strongly recommend 2010 onwards engines and only after a very thorough check.

Toyota specifically extended the warranty to replace the engine once the head gasket problems were identified. Several here had their engines replaced. Same as for the Avensis and Lexus. I don’t know if anyone has numbers to objectively suggest the failure rate, 1% or 10%. I don’t know if they are likely to manifest problems earlier in life, so older cars shouldn’t worry, or if they can “go” 10 years later.  Mine is approaching 15 years old with 140k miles; wanting a quick valuation I looked at our AutoTrader equivalent and found 3 all with about 200k. I think in the UK where used cars are cheap people just offload them for a quiet life. In Portugal mine is apparently still worth 7k and drives great so I keep it a bit longer.

around 3 years ago I bought a 2006 high mileage Lexus IS 220D for £1,475.00.

Bought thinking it would be cheap to run being diesel (nope 33-37mpg) and using it as second car alongside a 1989 Volvo 240GLT petrol estate as well as a 1996 Volvo 940 petrol estate.

The Lexus was serviced by Lexus for the first 4 years then independent at same garage every year. The MOT history was perfect with no advisories.

Test drove it before paying and all seemed well, no HG ok. Got the AC working with new Nissens AC condenser that I installed. Bought full size spare alloy. New Accessory drive belt as slight cracking, for holiday to IOW. After having 4 new Avon zv7's fitted after around 2 months later started to loose coolant. Gradually got worse and worse and was bubbling up out the expansion tank reservoir and leaking down the rad/fan.

Hated the turbo lag, mismatched 6 speed gearbox that lagged at national speed limits. Loved the safety aspect, knee, side, curtain, front airbags and traction control. Build quality was really good. Mine was a basic SE. Tried a HG sealer, but no difference. 

After 19 months and total of 187,000 miles I sold it to a breaker on eBay for £350. Glad to see it go as could get 5 months tax back and cut my cars down to just 2.

Should of bought an IS250 Auto. Photo on the day of collection.

There were 2,397 RAV4 T180s registered between 2005 and 2009 - this being the engine most likely to exhibit the acknowledged issue (the engine in the highest state of tune) and built during the period of the 'fault'. As of 4Q2022 there were 1,403 still licenced for use on the road - meaning that 994 (40%) were no longer on the road.

Statistics are clearly dangerous ... some of that 40% will have been taken off the road for other causes - insurance write-offs, MoT failures etc. - but at a guess something like 10% are probably attributable to engine issues being beyond economic repair.

Of the 60% still on the road, we don't know how many were repaired by Toyota under the goodwill warranty nor how many will exhibit engine issues in the future - but I'd guess at around the same 10%.

Someone with really nothing better to do could look at the reliability and failure rates of comparable vehicles on How Many Left to see how the Toyota diesel compares with the competition.

And as I like to point out, my father scrapped his 1997 Mondeo at 10 years old. “Economic repair” is determined by the resale value (domestic car market + enthusiasts) as much as by mechanical issues.

Love how that car looks, even today... I was looking to buy one of those. Quit after finding out those diesel engine problems. Got to see two of those... One black one silver. Same equipment. Good looking cars inside and out.

This weekend saw one on being driven on a road, dark blue color, very nice. It was a 220d.

Got an Auris instead.
