1NZ-FXE engine

I read somewhere that the piston rings in the FE and FXE would start to wear out at around 100K miles and lead to excessive oil consumption and that would be the main reason of the engine start failing.

Others say it’s one of the more reliable engines even with high mileages.

So what is to be believed?

What kind of maintenance should I do to preserve the engine and keep it clean?

Thanks!

If it were me...

Regular oil changes at least once a year to the manufacturers specification... proper servicing, decent petrol.

Stop worrying about what might happen, drive the car and enjoy it for what it is

Maintain the car, regular oil and filter changes using good quality oil will be just fine

Yep, change the oil and filter every 10k regardless and only worry if it starts burning lots of oil and blue smoke.

Thanks

I am indeed enjoying the car. No question.

I just got scared if I should be concerned about the reliability of the car and be precautious about driving it.

don't worry, there are prius out there with 300-500K miles that have had no engine issues - it uses the same engine, The FE engine has been around for nearly 25 years, so into the millions of engines produced

There are plenty of what if's in life

As above, look after the car and it will not eat your money

Great

I will check the oil level frequently and if any consumption I will keep an eye on it because it might be related to a beginning clogging of the EGR but try to prevent it by using good oil and change it every 10.000 km.

At the moment my car has a mileage of 97.000 km.

Old Chinese say, “never shake with the devil till you meet him”😀. Just service the car as advised and it will be ok. You have less than 60,000 miles on the car. It’s barely run in.

As far as I knew, it is the 1NR-FE  that has the issues with excessive oil consumption, that is the 1.33 petrol engine that was launched in 2008, and was first fitted in the late model mk2 Yaris. It was continued in the Mk3 and run up until 2017 when it was retired from use in the Yaris, so from the launch of the second facelift Mk3 yaris, in mid 2017, you would not be getting that engine any more. The issues with oil consumption affected earlier 1NR-FE engines from 2008 until about 2012, after which Toyota apparently fixed the issue, so 2013 - 2017 models of Yaris that have the 1NR-FE should not be affected. This does not apply to Hybrid Mk3 as they didnt use the 1NR-FE engine.

If you have a 2016 model which is not a Hybrid, and uses the 1.33 1NR-FE engine, it should be fine, as long as its been maintained properly and had good oil change history.

Does anyone why exactly the 2ZR FXE fitted in Auris and some Prius in some cases caused problems with high oil consumption and not the 1NZ FXE?

Are they not similar besides the 1NZ is 1,5 and the 2ZR is 1,8?

The 2zr 1.8 does not burn oil and is a totally different engine family - tbh most oil burning issues were fixed in production with in a 12-18 months

only reason you burn oil is the lack of maintenance TBH i do not see why you're focusing on a non issue

the 1nz-fxe is an eco engine that uses and attkinson cycle and has MPI

ps. A supercharged 2ZR was fitted to the Mk3 Yaris GRMN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Gazoo_Racing

2010 to 2014 2ZRFXE as in prius 3 and auris had low tension piston rings and the design could allow oil bleed holes in the piston to gum up, cause oil burning and cylinder wall damage. They were modified after 2015. Look at car care nut videos on YouTube, he stripps a rebuilds these sort of engines. His mantra is 5k or 6 monthly oil changes not 10k, quality oil. For the cost of an oil change, DIY less than 40 quid it's not worth risking 10 in my opinion. Many others will dispute this and they're welcome to do what they want with their own cars but I aim to keep mine as long as poss not change it every few years

Thanks for the explanation.

What about the quality of the gasoline? I use Shell v power octane 100 for my Yaris hybrid and occasionally add additives.

Would it be fine to continue using v power or more a waste of money?

Thanks!

I honestly don't know about the fuel, I presume the recommended fuel is fine some say premium stuff contains more cleaning additives so may help injectors a bit long term but regular long trips as opposed to tootling round towns is best for any engine. Some swear by buying bottles of additives, personally I'm sceptical about that, excellent maintenance, good oils more frequently than recommend and lots of time for the engine to work at full temperature to allow the oil's additives to do their work is what keeps everything good long term
