Firstly the dvd doesn't read the discs, does anyone know of anyone who can fix?

Secondly I can't get any media to play, only managed to get audio from a DVIX video file I downloaded. I've tried plugging a hdmi in and that doesn't work either...Help!

Hi there Thom,

Just thinking back when I've had similar issues with both DVD and CD disc not playing and a message coming up on screen/display, "Can't read disc". Have you tried inserting a CD cleaning disc? It's likely the lens inside the player is dirty/dusty stopping the laser reading what information is written onto the disc be it video, music, images etc.

There are a couple of types available and in my experience ones with a fine brush embedded in the disc are the best, they often come complete with a small amount of denatured alcohol which you apply to the tiny brush just before  putting into the player. Basically the brush cleans the laser lens and the alcohol helps polish the lens up. You might need to repeat the cleaning process several times.

Here one on Amazon for under £6.00:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nedis-CLDK110TP-Disc-Cleaner-Blu-ray/dp/B07HFCYY97/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3TOBAZXOY29GJ&keywords=dvd+cleaning+disc&qid=1689285059&sprefix=dvd+cleaning+disc%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-3

Fairly sure you can pick these up in some of the better Pound Shops for a lot less but go for ones with a brush and fluid.

If the players haven't been used in a while there's also a chance that the mechanism inside the player has become sticky, you might be lucky and be able to coax the mechanism into life using the cleaning disc and alternating with a CD and skipping tracks but letting them play a few seconds before skipping again. A CD should be easier for the player to read the disc than a DVD. The tracks on DVD are much smaller than those on a CD. The player will have different lasers to read both CD and DVD.

Hi again Thom,

If you've got the player to read and play a CD after cleaning that's progress. The DVD laser is far more sensitive than the one that reads CD's, the two lasers will sit on the same carriage next to each other. Try repeating the cleaning proccess, Disc Err, means that the laser can see the disc but can't read the information written on it. Before this you were getting a No Disc message meaning the lens could NOT see the disc at all.

How long has it been since you've been unable to play CD/DVD Thom?

Also ensure that the discs themselves are relatively clean and not scratched. Some discs seem to play with marks on them wjhere as others will have issues playing and you'll struggle to see anything wrong with the naked eye. Just as you can get DVD payer cleaners you can buy special CD/DVD cleaners that clean and polish the surface of the disc.

If DIY fixes like this fail your only option is to take the player(s) to a TV repair specialist. Still think this will be down to dirty lens's.

I think the laser unit needs replacing; I've cleaned it numerous times but no luck. I could live without the dvd player if I could only get it to play media off a memory card/USB drive!

Hi Thom,

I've had a laser unit go on an old (now) VHS VCR/DVD player in the past and managed to purchase a replacement unit which wasn't too expensive. Would mean you dismantling the main unit and identifying what's inside there, likely not something you want to get into though.

Not done a huge amount with USB thumb drives but recall that many of these units have limits on the size of the drives they will accept and could also have problems with the type of file format used on the drive. Memory cards can also be a problem now as the latest ones are much higher density and higher read write speeds than would have been the norm when your unit was new.

Have just had a browse through the PDF Manual for your unit(s) that Flash posted for you. Had you noticed that the player is limited to 16GB for both memory card or a USB drive?

Another thing I've come across with desktop and laptop computers is that the contacts inside ports can become dirty or even damaged, especially true with the USB ports. 10 years in the back of a car isn't a kind enviroment for delicate electronics. The USB ports can be made good if your careful if they're dirty or slightly damaged or even replaced but it's dismantling stuff and then need to be ok to solder!. Memory card slots are more of a problem but I have had success getting them working in the past.

Looking closer at the manual for your DVD player I see it's the type with a flip out front panel that you load the DVD/CD into, I had imagined your player was the type that accepts and ejects the disc through a thin slot on the side.

Being able to have the unit open will give you much better access to clean the lens manually and likely better than using a cleaner disc. Some ISP (denatured alcohol) applied to a cotton bud can be used to swab clean the lens surface BUT be gentle. Give it a bit of a gentle polish after with another but dry cotton bud. It may work for you Thom.

Sorry, only just seen this, it seems odd it can't read USB or SD, Disc Err is a worn laser usually but with the USB/SD issue as well it may be something else, do you have the 12v mains adapter or and other cables

Got all the cables and used the formats the manual suggests on usb/sd carda but the best I've managed is just audio of the video - no idea what's going on!

Hi Thom,

When you managed to get the audio of a DivX movie to play were you using the SD card slot, the USB port or was the file one burnt onto a dvd disc?

Have you checked for damage to the usb port on the main unit? I've seen USB ports damaged where the the plastic blade inside has been broken off which stops the four contacts making proper contact when USB stick is inserted. Have also seen them were the actual gold plated contacts have been mangled and bent out of position so they either don't make contact or they touch other contacts or the metal screen that surrounds the port.

It's possible I think that short on the usb port could also affect play back of files from the SD card slot or even from a dvd disc. If you going to visually check the usb port Your going to need a very good maginfying glass or better still a jewelers loop.

Not sure if you any knowledge on USB connections but looking inside you'll see four gold contacts the outer two provide the power, 5v and a ground, and the two inner contacts carry the data. The outer metal case is part of the screening that keeps stray electical fields from interfering with the data signals.

Had a bit of a read up on DivX itself and it seems that DivX is for compression of the video itself, the audio is left in MP3 format. That may help explain why you could here the audio being played back.
