Litres and Pints

Well, with a couple of drinks that are the now dearer than a litre of petrol and every pub we have been in charges different amounts, some up to two pounds more for the same drinks. Have they seen what the petrol stations are doing and are following suit?

Also, anyone know why some pubs charge extra on a pint because it's the weekend? How does this change the overheads from weekdays?

Is this profiteering or are they ripping off punters (unlike the petrol stations 😁)

Charge more because they can, and people will pay the extra? Charging extra on the weekends is when the pubs will make their profit. During the week, the drinks served will barely keep the lights on and the staff paid. The weekends will hopefully make up for the lean weekdays. The government has long been trying to tax the alcohol and public house businesses out of existence, or so it seems to me.

It depends on the owner and supplier, if a pub does 30 barrels a month or a little place that does 10 they get different discounts, events have a premium price on some drinks

soft drinks and bottles is where the margin is made

did a bit of bar back and restock work 25 years ago, so not up to date - **** work, but it paid the bills (worst job was the bottle bins)

Obvious innit? More people go to a pub on a weekend, so there is more wear on the carpets, more flushing of the loos so more water used, more spills on the tables/floor, so more cloths/mops needed, it all costs money and because of the foregoing aforementioned excuses reasons, the prices have to increase accordingly - nowt to do with wanting extra profits! :no2:

Taking some of the ssues on charging more over the weekends makes sense. But for the last few weeks we have popped into one of the four pubs in the local town. On both weekdays and weekend there is very little difference in footfall, so why would this justify higher prices on the weekend if it was busy it would perhaps be justified.

Bob, unless you are there all day how do you know if the footfall doesn't vary?

The quiet, 10 barrels a month,  pub might make do with a barman who pulls pints and collects glasses.

Your 30+ pub might need 2 or 3 servers and possibly a glass collector too.

I am sure most people prefer tables to be cleared and cleaned rather than DIY.  It all adds cost and needs more staff when busy.

It's just economics of scale, risk to reward, TBH food is what draws the putters in these days, Alcohol is just a secondary income, of course every bar has its band a brewery support workers, Hic :drunk:

Anyhoo, I'm t-total and anti-social

flash22,  and woe betide the pub that serves cold food that should be hot.  Our local served a S&K pie the centre still cold- strike 1.

Our next preference, not cheap at £28-38, served duck cold and me and Mrs but had problems the next day.   I had the fillet steak.

We are looking for another restaurant.

Roy, I hear the George at Stamford is serving unsurpassed roast beef nowadays.

The champagne 🍾 bar sounds nice too.

As soon as I can find my Corby trouser press and a clean shirt, I intend to whizz down the A1 and see for myself.

It may have changed a bit from my 1974 visit.

A friend of ours went there last year and said the food was good but they are still paying the bill off.😅

Hi Roy, A friend of my wife works in the pub and she has told us that a few more customers do come in weekends and weekdays but has said never more then two of them work behind the bar. They don't sell food so maybe that's the reason.

We have been in the other local pubs as well but as every one has different prices for the same drinks we have not noticed before if the others charge more on weekends.

I will have to check this out so it may take some time.😅

Hello Bob, yes it does look like a few quid spend to say the least.

But I would sooner have one excellent meal out, than several mediocre ones.

In fact, I may look at staying over with my Aygo owning friend to save the drive back if I am tempted by the wine.

Believe me after experiencing a lot of hospital food recently, I reckon live a little while you can.

We pop in to the George for morning coffee by the fire and to read the papers or sit in the yard for afternoon tea.

One year we had dinner and B&B, what they called a Serene Sunday.  We were two couples and entertained a third as a farewell thank you.

They gave us a glass topped table in the centre of the room and carved the beef at the table.

Hi Paul, Sorry to hear you have been in hospital and trust you are well now. As I said earlier a friend went their and really enjoyed the food. I looked at their various menus when you mentioned it as I remembered the name. I would certainly give it a try if I lived that way. Whilst it may be a tad expensive you only live once. So if you do go push the boat out and enjoy yourself. 👍

Finally managed to find out that the pub we have been visiting operates a happy hour every day till 7pm then changes prices on a Friday after 7pm through till Monday morning. The other pubs offer cheap food at certain times during the day but prices for drinks remain the same. Occasional offer two for one but at least two pounds dearer for the same drinks.

Speaking to a few people in the pub and they say that due to the increase in prices they have cut down the times they visit. Has the  price's affected how often you visit or not made any difference.?

Its been hard work finding out how much the other pubs charge.😂
