2017 Rav4 "critical system failure"

Morning all,

Took my wife's Rav in to get looked at because it was pulling to the right/trouble steering. Needed new wheel bearings. Got those. Had the brake lines flushed, new brakes/rotors put on the front (they were a four, went ahead and got it done). Rear brakes fine for now. Also did oil change/tire rotation. Pick up the car the next day, drives great, all good.
Wife calls me the next day saying all her alerts were flashing: lost all driver assists, anti-lock braking, 'critical system failure' flashing on the screen. The actual brakes seem to be working fine.
We swap cars, I drive it, none of those alerts are on, everything seems fine. We take it to the shop to double check it. They drive it around, no alerts. They went over everything, found that 'something' (they told me, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was) was a little loose, resecured it tested it, everything great.
Go out today, soon as we hit the highway it happened again. We ended up finishing our errand. When we started the car, everything was fine. Car was fine driving home to get my car, and was fine driving to the shop. The wife said the 'critical alerts' only happened when we hit 70 on the highway.

I like the shop we go to go, I've never had issues until now. They've worked on my car (2009 toyota matrix) and I've had great experiences. Even now they've been very accommodating/discounted some of the work. I managed to get pictures/video of the alerts since they weren't able to recreate the problem. They said they'd have their 'master tech' look at it monday, but it may have to go to a dealership because it may be the speedometer going out/computer issue.

I'm not necessarily -blaming- the shop, and I told them that, I understand sometimes **** just happens with even ****tier timing. My concern is this problem didn't happen until AFTER the work was done. The car physically drives great, all the issues we were having with performance are gone, but then this one popped up. I just wanted to pick the brains of the internet.
Thanks for reading and any ideas/thoughts you may have to share. Have a great day.

Hi Rhys,

It may well just be just a coincidence that this occurred after you put the car in. When you took it back, you say they found something loose and once fixed all was ok. They have been accommodating which is a good sign and you have been pleased with the previous work they have done on your Matrix.

If it were me, I would wait for the master tech to see what he finds on Monday and if it is unrelated to any of the work you have had done then accept it is a genuine fault as it can happen. The problem is when you use a garage on a regular basis who you like and have a good rapport with, when things do go wrong it can be difficult because of this familiarity. I would ask them what it was they found that was loose and make a note of it.

Post back what they say and let us know.👍

"Master technician" looked at it today, said it was throwing "Speed censor" codes but couldn't recreate the problem--he's going to drive it on the highway tomorrow, as it only happened when the Rav hit a certain speed.

Assuming your rav4 it’s not a hybrid otherwise you would have had a lot more trouble.
Now it is a certain that the new wheel bearings one or both are faulty or when installed some damage had been done to the sensors.
Whatever the garage says it is entirely on them to get the car fixed free of charge.
What brand of bearings they have fitted important to ask?
Best to stick to oem or SKF or Blueprint, SNR, Timken, anything else especially the cheap unknown brands are absolutely full stop.
My opinion is definitely a speed sensor issue as a result of poor workmanship or defective parts. Either way they need to take care of your car and fix it .
Good luck

I picked it up today. They called me and said they couldn't fix it. I ended up taking it to a Toyota dealer. The previous shop gave me the old speed sensor, they installed a new one for free. On the paperwork they gave me, it clearly says "Technician broke speed sensor upon installation of the wheel bearing", but when they installed the second sensor, the problem persisted.

Yeah, not a hybrid.

So it's at the Toyota dealer getting looked at.
