Help needed sourcing a Mk1 Gearbox

Hi,

I am trying to fix my (learner driver) son's 2005 1.3 VVTI Petrol 5sp manual Mk1 Yaris "Colour edition" (needing a new clutch) and wanted to fit a replacement gearbox at the same time. The reg is 05 and the V5 shows model as SCP12R-CHMRKW with Engine number begins with 2SZD5xxxx . The car has 91K on the clock. The current gearbox has issues in that the changes in/out of 3rd gear are very "notchy" and it sometimes jumps out of reverse... I have had quotes on refurbishing the gearbox which come out at more than the car's value, so I am tackling the clutch/gearbox with the help of a friend.
I am looking at breakers and on eBay for a decent box, but have realised that there are a few variants of gearboxes in play so I don't want to get the incorrect type. Having found what I think is a candidate, I am after some reassurance that it will actually fit, and I am hoping you could confirm. The gearbox I am considering buying is this one: eBay item 324983194880 ... but since I have not stripped the old one out yet, and am hoping to do the swap and clutch job in a day, I am looking for some peace of mind... can you help by confirming this is a match, or perhaps suggest an alterative? I am hoping to find one with less miles on the box and with a warranty of sorts within a learner-driver's budget... I am also considering B-Parts.com as a source, has anyone used them?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help...

Going by the model code it's a C154 gearbox (30300-52800) tbh drop the gearbox oil (crack the filler plug loose first) if it has no glitter in it, leave it well alone

TBH the 5F manual boxes are strong as long as you keep an eye on the fluid/oil and will happily do 200-300k unlike a Ford, Vauxhall, or French car

just a lateral thought - for the notchy gearchange i used some washers on the top of my gearbox by the pressure bolt.  A bit of trial and error, using too many washers meant it would pop out of gear, too few and it was very hard to engage.  Might be worth looking at.

Also, as Bob says, check the gearbox fluid.  Its cheap drivetrain insurance!

Thanks for the tips guys, the previous owners were teenagers (known to me) who admitted that they enjoyed trying to take on a 15% hill in 3rd loaded with school buddies, so I think the 3rd gear syncro is mashed...

Do you know where on the gearbox I might look for the numbers that might identify the one in place? (e.g. 30300-52800)

A C154 is easy enough to find, you're taking a gamble on a used box found a few but all up in the miles

30300-52800 is the substitute part number

you may have better luck with the previous ones

30300-0D030

or the early one

30300-0D020

I agree it is a gamble, but the cost of a replacement car or refurbished gearbox is too high for my son who is learning... Any experience of "b-parts.com" I think I have found on there that only has 62,000Km, just looking for a way to be 100% sure of compatibility before I order... the original is still in the car so I can't compare bell-housing bolts etc...

I have already spent some £'s on the car for my older son replacing brakes/disks, rear wheel bearings and tyres etc, so am happy the car is a decent runner... I reckon a clutch kit and 2nd had gearbox might come in at £500 if I do the job myself... many £'s cheaper than the alternatives...

Trent were very helpful... phoned them, got some advice and info and ended ordering a box... arrived less than 24hrs later! Now to fit it next weekend!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W3tELL_R38 was very helpful. In the end, my friend and I completed this yesterday. The box supplied by Trent seems a lot better than the original.

I need some guidance on tightening up the sloppy linkage/ball joints under the gearstick to complete the job...
