While out today a yellow engine light came up on the dashboard. The cars performance isn't impaired, what does the warning light mean please?

You need to get the code(s) read, it can be any one of 100's of codes

If you still have the hand book you can check in there what the light is for .

Once you find out what it means then as said on here you need codes to item the fault .

I had one a few weeks ago and turned out the front passenger brake  sensor was damaged

When I took the wheel off the cable had been fitted wrong and touching the wheel and burned thro so I cut the damaged part off soldered it together and rerouted the cable way from the wheel . Light out .

Normally, there's a procedure to erase the codes too.

Not all codes dissapear (and engine light goes off) by only fixing the thing that causes an error.
Often, you have to erase the codes too.

You'll need to get an OBD2 (On Board Diagnostic 2) reader or pay some garage to do it.

Note: not all OBD2 are the same. Some can't even read the most basic code, while some can read everything AND perform specialised function like recalibrate the steeling wheel with a touch of the screen.

The yellow engine light is also called "Money light" for obvious reason. (You are very much to be bound to spend money fixing it.)

Some code readers are a sucription service others only work with some and not all odb2 codes.

A good one is Carly but works with own software only and the free software units out there sell you add on to make them more usefull but its still a minefield from one MFG to another as not all functions are covered.

It may just read the code but not clear the code.

You may be better off going to a autoelectrican at least for reading codes then decide to let them fix it or repair it yourself then return to have the code clearded.
