Engine clunking noise

Hi. Driving during the last two weeks, I heard many times an annoying clunking noise when the car goes from ICE drive to electric or maybe vice versa, not absolutely sure. Any similar experiences? Thanks.

Hi Nick, I can notice a barely imperceptible sensation of car momentum when mine changes from one to the other but no audible clunk. In fact I have to look to see which motor is propelling the car forward, the change is so smooth and unnoticeable.

Hi Bernard. It used to be the same here. But after 2 and a half years usage maybe it started now. I need to talk to toyota about it. How old is your car and what's the mileage? Mine has done only 11k.

Hi, we had recently discussed here

similar situation in mk3, in fact all Toyota hybrids since 2010 Prius gen3 act and sounds exactly the same.
Loud clunky sounds when ice is turning on or off are not unusual. Sometimes can be a normal occurrence but in some cases can be a sign of few problems. In your new ( recent) cars generally speaking you should have no issues other than perhaps a bad fuel quality, wrong octane number, too much additives in fuel or any possible fuel air mixture issues that can upset the combustion and cause misfire or engine to shutdown at higher rpm then the clunk is audible and felt through as thud. Usually happens as normal event after a long downhill and engine being ON at high revs to discharge the hybrid Battery and you are driving slowly or being already stopped the engine may shut off with a bang.
My first thing to do is to change the petrol type and station.

Have you noticed when or under what circumstances the clunk occurs?

Just tested the car again. The clunking noise occurs when transitioning from ev to ice, low speed and medium acceleration. Could be a decoupling noise produced by the ev motor prior to engaging the ice.

Are you able to make a recording of the clunk you hear?

Not really. It's only doing it when driving.

Sound like a warranty thing just after 11K miles- will you go to your Toyota dealer?

Car is 18 months old and 12km, about 7500 miles.

Some engine clunks from time to time are pretty normal behaviour from these cars, new or old. I have them too from time to time while other times the car is so smooth on start up or switching off the engine, as smooth as Bentley,  I am serious, no vibrations, no thuds, no clunky noises.
