Mysterious chime

In the last few days, I have twice had a single low-pitched chime (or bong) while driving along at a steady speed, within the limit and I can't fathom out what it's telling me. I haven't seen any signal on the head-up display or the instrument panel so I'm mystified as to what is's due to. I searched the owner's manual without success so I thought I'd ask if anyone here knows.

Without being in the car with you when it happens it’s almost impossible to tell. A video might help.

That would be difficult as it has only happened twice (on separate days) and I have no way of predicting if it will happen again.

Primus, I think that is higher pitch and in close pairs if the lane assist says the edges are ill defined and multiple beeps if you depart.

I wish they would product a single bloop card for reference.

That's a possibility but I have tried allowing the car to drift (on an empty road) and all that happens is that the steering corrects the drift, without any audible warning.

Speed camera ?
You still get them even if not using NAV.

Yes, not sure which country you are in but we get two beeps when taking a route with a fixed camera.

Did you have stuff in the front passenger seat? Depending on the weight of the items and their location, sometimes inertia can trigger the "dude is not wearing a seatbelt" alarm.

I've spent awfully long even in different cars before I realized it was that.

At least I think it's definitely a lower pitch bong than the lane assist stuff. You can easily try it by simply not putting on a seat belt and driving a few meters. If you recognize the bong, it was probably this.

What is the speed set up for, I had mine set for 60mph and every time I went over I would get chime.

I’ve finally managed to set up my chime alert for exceeding the limit, I have set mine 3mph over, are you sure you haven’t got this turned on, as I found that it seemed to turn red ( with no chime as I hadn’t set it) as soon as it hit 30, ( say) is it the tpms, having had a recent puncture it alerted me with a chime every so often…

If I exceed the speed limit, the indication in the head-up display turns red but I dont get any audible warning.

No, nothing on the passenger seat.

I suppose that's a possibility. I was not using Satnav.

You can tell if it's that as they will happen in the same locations, assuming they occur on roads you use regularly.

Bear in mind that you can get a bong for a camera you don't see/pass if you turn off between the bong and the camera.

I get a chime when joining a road with average speed cameras in use

Thanks for all the suggestions. It does seem likely that the chime comes from an external source, such as a speed radar/camera. I'm fairly sure that the one I got last week occurred on the way out and in roughly the same place on the return journey.

Bear in mind that the direction of travel matters. On mine I get a bong a few hundred metres before the camera and another just about when (usually after) passing it (if I pass it).
