HUD Disappointment.

I have a '21 Launch Edition with HUD fitted. I was hoping that navigation directions from my Android Auto connected phone would appear in the HUD in the form of simple arrow-type symbols etc. but no such luck. The handbook (page 60) has little info on HUD but suggests that such symbols will only appear if it's a Toyota SatNav system fitted, which it isn't.

Have I missed something here or is it impossible to display such symbols via Android Auto please? Also, do the 2 parallel white lines on the right of the HUD display have something to do with Lane Keeping?    Thank you.

No, you haven’t missed something.  Unfortunately, the only NAV that can be displayed on HUD come from built in SatNav ( if fitted).

And, yes, the two white lines are repeats of the lane assist/lane centering.

At the moment,  I have mine set to show the rev counter so I can check n engine running.  I’m finding that useful.

Although I have built in sat nav I rarely use it so don’t have that set.  Next long journey I do I may try it, although I do prefer Waze.

Thank you Graham47. That's a shame then, but, for the benefit of Roy124, I have to say that I find the HUD display of current speed and detected speed limits useful, and clearly visible...   But, it was the Nav symbols I was really hoping for, having found them to be very useful on another car 😒.

Richard, thank you.

While I use the AA Google sat map I have used the turn directions on the centre display.  HUD speed would be useful I suppose.

It's funny the difference in expectations we have - I'm still gobsmacked a Yaris can even have a HUD!!

Toyota need to up their game clearly - I demand a full heads-up augmented reality interface in the Mk5!! (That would be cool, if it drew a path where you need to go like in Forza, or boxes around potential dangers like in Person of Interest!)

Cyker, I'm definitely going to be p/x'ing for a Mk5 if that comes to pass 😉.

The 130 bhp version might tempt me anyway, but not for a while.....

Same am also surprised the Yaris have the option of the HUD previously, usually they are reserved for bigger car up the range. VW group cars have to pay optional extra for a reverse camera.

Don't have one yet so 130hp, heated seats, vegan leather with it in a few years will do.

Exactly.  On a different forum someone posted an image of a Polestar HUD.

This showed green rectangle outline on hazards such a Jeremy Vine wobbling towards you.  But really good was the box around a pedestrian crossing the road in the shadow of a bridge.

Looked good on the picture, and he said it was impressive when driving.

I don’t know how people can even like an hud, perhaps it’s just me but I had this on few Toyota previously and every time I tried to use it caused me instant headaches. Maybe because I drive at night only I don’t know but it always felt unnatural, like playing a game and it takes away the reality feeling and for me personally it is even dangerous. Jet fighters pilots can use as there is almost nothing else in the sky but on the road and especially in a busy area like London for example where anyone and anything just jump in front of you at any one moment and HUD is a full stop , or accident waiting to happen. Just my thoughts. 🫢

I want camera rear view mirrors too.  Not sure how long it would take for me to look in to see to the rear rather than mirrors.

I think Lexus has them.

Ah, you need a Honda e then  - has HUD as well btw 😉.  But, just 100 miles range at best.

I see your point Tony. I turn mine off after dark as the bright image on the screen could be distracting and induce a headache. However, I like to have the option of having HUD, as long as it can be turned off.

Had HUD on my previous car,  a Hyundai, and it was excellent.

The nav had a vertical telescopic blue bar that appeared in the last couple of hundred metres and then got shorter to show you how far to the turning. It was really useful when there where other turns nearby and saved having to look at the main display at critical moments.

Yeah HUDs are a bit marmite - I know a lot of people dislike them and find them distracting, but I'm the opposite - I love not having to look down at the dash or trying to peer round the steering wheel when it's slightly turned and obstructing the dash.

My one changes brightness to match ambient and it's very well calibrated - Even at night it doesn't cause me glare or eyestrain, and I'm very sensitive to such things, as mentioned in that other thread about the proliferation of excessively bright headlights

Is that a new thing? The Polestar HUD I've seen is nowhere near that sophisticated; It wasn't much better than the one in my Yaris for the most part - Impressive since the Yaris costs half!

Some of the newer VW group ones, esp. in the Audis, are supposedly quite fancy, but I'm not sure if they're just concepts as I've yet to see one in real life...

Could be at night when it's on bright. Haven't had one so cannot give personal account. Read you may look to train as a driving instructor, hud is perfect for the learners.

No idea, 3rd party image on a non-car forum.

The HUD on our EV is excellent - mainly because (are you listening Toyota?) it mirrors the minimal-but-useful navigation display for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, also shown on the screen in front of the steering wheel. It's a shame that even with the 'new' 9-inch screen on our YX Excel, only the built-in navigation pops up on the driver's display, and there was no HUD option when I ordered last year. And the built-in nav is OK-ish, but nowhere near the standard of 3rd-party apps

So I'd like Toyota to offer a HUD, and one which mirrors the navigation from whatever app I'm using, and please, whilst you're doing this, repeat the 3rd-party navigation in the instrument cluster. Not much to ask?

It could be, but the hud could dimmer together with the rest of the dashboard instruments, not sure really though, just never liked it.
Driving instructor on waiting for the moment, perhaps when I get a bit older 👍

Tony, considering your posts of general car maintenance and knowledge, I thought you were quite golden myself 🙂

HUD and keyless are the best things on my Yaris cross. HUD is just a must for me from now. Yes, it doesn't show navigation when using 3rd party nav(android or Apple) only when using build navigation(not very good thou) but this is nothing for me.

In my country, there was an additional trim package for 1000e for hud, motorized tail, and adaptive(matrix) led lights so this was a no-brainer for me.

It's depending. I love these features but my dad just turning his head and don't understand why. That's normal, different people expect different properties from automobiles.

The Good Lady has HUD in her Yaris. She opted for the Yaris Excel with tech package and Panoramic roof.

My dealer keeps pestering me to buy a new car as my finance is running out, and I keep telling them, get Toyota to put the HUD back and add heated seats and steering wheel, maybe 360 degree camera, and then we can talk

Usually they are confused, as it seems a lot of the salemen aren't aware you could get a HUD in the Mk4 Yaris except in the Launch editions!
