Map Update quite easy on MM17

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have updated the map on my MM17 unit in my 2020 Rav4 to the latest version.

Once purchased you get a link to a 12GB zip file and it says download to usb which is a little misleading as that's not actually what you want to do.

I downloaded the zip file locally to my laptop and then extracted the contents of it to the root of my usb stick, so on the root is a folder called FMU and in that folder there are several .iso files.

You must have a FAT32 formatted usb stick.

Put it in the car usb slot and go into Ready.  Make sure you are in an area of good cell coverage so the car can talk back to Toyota.

It will say validating update files for a few minutes, then ask you if you want to update.

You enter the code from the purchase screen.

Then it takes about an hour showing progress as it goes.

Then it asks you to remove the usb key, reboot, and you have updated maps.

I doubt that this bit is required ... we have next to no cell coverage and the maps update just fine! 😉

If you are updating via USB, I believe all the required information is on the USB drive.

3 years of Map Care was included with cars bought in the UK in 2020 - I haven't had to pay for the updates that I've installed so far. Things may have changed since ...

Having problems updating the map - have the usb stick plugged in , but the car just briefly says validating (as it might for any accessory I think) , but no update process is starting. It worked fine when I did it last year. Definitely a FAT32  format and all the files are there (according to my laptop). The car is connected to wifi and internet.

(yes, I know I know a newer map is due soon but I'm on a holiday v shortly and want the new map! Yes I know Apple and google do etc etc but I actually like using the car satnav.....)

When I do mine I always format the USB and add the new map file. I’ve found in the past that just adding the file over the top of the old file can screw up the update.

Is the partition on the stick 64gb or less. Mine is fussy about both size and format

Thanks Paul and Ernie,

It's a 32gb stick. The file structure as in image attached. Maybe I should make FMU the only parent folder? It's a new stick Ernie, so it can't be an overwrite problem, but the files have been in the stick quite a while and maybe I have corrupted something. My instincts are that I need to reformat the stick, re download the files and start again. What a bore!

When I read 'easy', I knew immediately you weren't referring to the Touch 2 with GO system

Yes, I think ... you should make FMU the only parent folder.

The FMU folder should (must) be at the 'root' level of the USB drive.

If it is a subfolder of a 'root' level 2023v1_MapUpdate folder the install won't work.

(It should be easy enough to 'drag' the FMU folder up a level and delete the redundant 2023v1_MapUpdate folder.)

You're star! Have many, many virtual beers ... 🙂 🙂  😄

My car has reached its third birthday - I've even had to get it an MoT - so my 3 year map update subscription probably expires at the end of the month. So, it's timely and convenient to get one last map update for 'free'. Thank you!

'Interestingly' the following are now expired, and I can get them back if I pay £119 to have them bundled with the latest map update:

I'll have to see how I get along without them ...

My map subscription expires in Aug 2024 so it's slightly longer than 3 years from the car registration. Hopefully I will get at least one more update next year.

Is that £119 for 1 year subscription, i.e. two updates or only for a one time download?

I didn't look that closely when I grabbed what I could for the original subscription but I'm pretty sure that it is for a 1 year subscription (so two map updates assuming that Toyota continue to update the maps twice a year).

Edit: and I just checked - my original MapCare expires 14/10/2023 ... 😉

Just had a look on eStore this morning, idle curiosity, and I noticed this:

image.thumb.png.2622150897d01fc92d371ede6b7b5662.png

If I read that correctly then the 3yr update deal is back.

Am I too optimistic?

Is CY17 a different system to MM17/MM19? I had thought that the eStore only showed items appropriate for the vehicle selected.

Maybe ... the only way to find out is to buy one ...

... so I did ...

I was logged-in, it was my vehicle selected, it is the map update option that I would expect for my car.

I was able to add the "3 Year Map Update Subscription & Services" to my basket and pay for it - only to get an eStore error at the end!

But the transaction did go through:

Screenshot2023-11-12121455.thumb.png.748d79a25c15a336a734bdfd0b9318a4.png

And in my list of purchased items I have:

So, yes, it would appear that it is back ...

... and it does appear to answer the question that the subscription starts immediately. i.e. from the date of purchase rather than a later "activation" or from first download.

I still have one eligible update to come in Spring 2024 so a purchase now would effectively negate that, but five updates for £119 is still better than only one.

I have asked Toyota CR to check that is correct.

I've just bought the 3 year subscription for our Corolla and got the error message at the end too, but the purchase went through OK.

Incidentally, does anyone know if you can buy the 3 year subscription offer for the same car more than once? I previously purchased it for my wife's C-HR in 2020, it has now expired, and when I look on the e-store to buy it again it's shown as available for our Corolla but not the C-HR? I emailed Toyota Customer Service a while ago to ask but have had no reply as yet.

My original MapCare expired 14/10/2023 so this morning's purchase has given me in effect 37 months worth of MapCare - so, I'm not complaining ... 😉

(It's still only the next five map updates as I'd grabbed Autumn 2023 just before my original subscription expired.)

Buying two subscriptions for the same car would be a waste of money - you'd get two activation codes for the same multimedia system and wouldn't be able to use either on the other car.

How far out of support is the C-HR? I could imagine that the renewal subscription would have to be purchased within a reasonably short time (e.g. six months) after the previous subscription expired. But I'm merely surmising ... 😉

That's not quite what I meant. I purchased one 3 year subscription for the C-HR in 2020, which has now expired, and I'd like to purchase another. However the e-store won't let me, it will only let me purchase a 1 year sub for that car, not 3 years. Hence my question, can you not buy the 3 year offer again for the same car?

I wasn't suggesting purchasing two for the Corolla and trying to install one of them on the C-HR, I know that wouldn't work 🙂

From past experience there's no time limit on buying updates as long as the unit is still supported by Toyota. Eg I bought an update for our 2012 Avensis for the first time in 2019 and it worked fine.

I doubt that.  Imagine the previous owner did not take out a subscription and you bought the car years later.
