Advisory re. Shock Absorber at 31k Auris 1.2T

I have just purchased a 2015 Auris 1.2 turbo with 31k from a dealer and have now found out there was an advisory 5.3.2(b) nearside rear (MOT June 2023).  I can detect a slight knocking sound from the nearside rear - more apparent on an uneven road surface.

The car is under Warranty and I will speak to the dealer first thing tomorrow. I am very surprised that there is a problem with the shock absorber(s) on a car with such low mileage.  I am going to ask that both rear shocks are replaced.  The car is otherwise spotless and engine runs like a dream.  Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

The thing is, despite the low mileage it is an 8 year old car. The previous owner might have clouted the kerb or a huge pot hole with that wheel. Did you buy it from a Toyota dealer?

Used car that comes from a dealer and especially all of these approved ones should have MOT advisory rectified, otherwise  it’s not an approved car but like bought from car auction without warranty.
Anything on used approved should be perfect, no work should be needed on the next service except oil and filters. Shock absorber failure and car sold like that it’s not a good customer service, push for replacement and apology. Mot history is very important when buying a used car and anything should have been fixed as part of the deal. Dealers are making most of their profits from selling used cars so don’t worry about them, they still will have a good chunk of money earned.
When we had our second Auris we had promised for many issues to be corrected, including leaking shock absorber front left.
On collection day we noted that non had been done. The car was returned to the dealer for work exceeding £1000 , a courtesy car was provided and a dealer 5 year extended warranty supplied., and of course apologies to my gf, and I can tell you these guys were very lucky she accepted it. 😂🫢 Next time they should have kept their promise.

Good advice from Tony HSD as usual. Take it back pronto and get both replaced, and ask for a free next service by way of apology, you may not get it but they may offer you something. If you don’t ask you don’t get.

Donna hasn't confirmed whether it's a Toyota dealer or a general dealer in cars? Or, being silly, an antique dealer.

The warranty could be one of those questionable aftermarket jobbies.

Whichever is the case, and if from a reputable "dealer", they should rectify the advisory and probably have done so prior to sale.

We're assuming that;

a) The dealer didn't replace the shock absorber after the MOT, but before selling the car to Donna.

AND

b) The noise is actually coming from the shock absorber.

Neither of those may necessarily be the case.

But that is relating to leaking or misting. Whether that is the reason for the noise, it should have been replaced pre sale.

They haven't replaced it though, that's what Donna is going to request.

How do you know? Donna doesn't mention having examined the shock absorber. The car was MOT'd in June, and Donna has 'just purchased it'. Therefore we don't know whether the dealer replaced the shock absorber between the MOT being carried out in June, and Donna purchasing the car.

@yossarian247 It is nothing to do with suspension in Auris 2.   Check your rear seats, and drop it down.  Add a rubber or tape on the metal U shape where the seats hook up.  Those area rattle whenever no body seats on the rear seats.  I put inner bike tube and it fits perfectly.  It works fine for the past 2 years.  I wasted my money replacing the stabilizer bar links that the original part cost more than €400.  I replace it with €30 afftermarket part that is not as high quality as original parts. The knocking was still there until I finally found the culprit.

So, check your rear seats first. Drop it down, and add some roles of tapes.

By the way, we may need to replace the rubber bottom parts on the stabilizer links. We can get it from Febest for $5 each, or $10 a pair. It is just rubber and deform as it ages even though it is genuine Toyota parts.  The genuine ball joint and stabilizer links are very expensie but they are indeed last almost forever as long as the boot is not torn.

The rear shocks are pretty cheap and durable/firm.  I think they are made by KYB but you also can buy either KYB or Billstein but I do not recommend replacement yet unless you feel it goes far too down whenever you hit a bump.  A worn shocks rarely have any noise but just soft, bottoming feeling first.  Only aftermarket cheap struts are sometimes noisy.

It is not suspension noise. It is noise from the rear seats latch to the body. Add some rubber bands or used bike tube, or tape will eliminate that tud knocking noise.

Thank you for all the helpful advice which is hugely appreciated. The shock absorber was replaced by the (general) dealer prior to the car being delivered - I wasn't aware due to poor communication from the salesperson.  I have since had a safety check at a Toyota dealership and they have confirmed the shock absorber was replaced and everything else is good.  The car has a history of being serviced by Toyota according to their schedule.  Dealer has agreed to pay for next full service by Toyota so it remains under the 'Toyota Relax service warranty' until it is 10 years. What a great forum. Thank you again.

Were you able to sort the knocking?

I think it was coming from the boot floor cover. I've adjusted the position and it seems okay.  If not I'll try the helpful suggestions re the rear seat latches above.

The knocking pronounced in low speed, and uneven roads instead of big bump. Especially when the left and right of the car is not even. That's the latch of the seat. I had remove the entire boot boards, etc. It was still there only on low speed, uneven roads.

Hi Donna,

I think we are in a minority with the 1.2T so just pretend we are special.😂

I wouldn’t mine having one too, but the traffic here is killing me and I drive a lot. 😉
