I am replacing the number plate light bulbs with these LEDs. They are Osram w5w capless bulbs with a 4 year guarantee.  Not cheap, but nice.

LED numberplate lamps

They are not overly bright unlike the replacement led built-in units you can buy from Chinese sites.

There are Chinese ones that isn't so bright too, they will be ok. I'm fine with the glow worms on the number plate as do not want it brighter, though have replaced the cabin and boot with led. Cost £4 for 10 about 5 years ago, can get similar cheaper from Ali express now.

They are perfect in those lights, I’ve fitted several sets.  It’s a bit of a fiddle up there but a set of small picks helps and I got the bulbs out with the aid of masking tape - I couldn’t grip them without.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's the Osram LED's this evening.

My iPhone camera makes LED's look a lot brighter, these are the side lights, not brake lights!

Did the same on my IQ.

Same bulbs too.

Very happy with the result...

Some led replacement bulbs fitted instead of standard w5w make the number plate impossible to read at night. I have seen plenty  of these cases even on Toyota cars., vans , taxis etc. Perhaps the problem is the high intensity and temperature of the light pattern and how projects into a  straight line. When very dark at night driving on country lanes without a street lights whoever drives behind only can see two lights going straight towards the bumper and the ground. The light reflects from the number plate which makes the numbers disappear.
I was thinking before to replace those just because they are the most often items I do change on my car but since I saw how they look on others I decided not to.
Just my thoughts as someone who sees things from a side. , distance.

I had that problem on my MX5 with multi LED replacement units. These Osram bulbs are a brighter white rather than flooding the area with 20 or so led chips. My numberplate is unreadable because I used paintbrush before posting 😂🤣

Haha, I never meant your number plate but most others on the road. You can’t know about how it looks because  you are inside driving the car but if you pay attention to other cars with this conversion you will see it for yourself. I don’t know what leds they have used but to me looks bad , even illegal.

But according  to Osram also these bulbs are illegal for exterior application ( like numberplate )

"These products do not have ECE approval and must not be used on public roads in any exterior application."

That's interesting - I thought it was legal to LED-swap ancillary lights, just not your main beams

It's just that Osram hasn't bothered to get ECE approval, after Brexit there is a reciprocal UK/EU agreement (approved by one means reciprocal approval) but that stops at some stage then people will have to go through approval in two markets to sell in UK and EU.  Too expensive, I suspect, for small items like LED bulbs

Interesting why Toyota didn’t include led on certain  application from factory?!  Is it because of money savings or rules they have to comply?
Are you aware of any other makes that uses led on number plates lights from factory? I only paid attention to these aftermarket fitted by car owners as they do really brush the number plates writing and makes it impossible to read, perhaps  they had been looking for that results. I don’t know, but I refrained from fitting these to my car as I don’t want to get pulled  over by the cops at night while on my way to work and waste time chatting to them as they are bored and has nothing else to do.
