Dead battery? No power please help

Hi

I have this problem that my car doesn’t start by pushing the start button, the Navi doesn’t start or the HvAC.

The car is not making the usual humming when unlocking and opening the door.

However the light is working and door lock and unlocks by remote.

I came home from a long drive yesterday so the 12 v Battery should be well charged.

However I sat this morning in the car some 10-15 min and trying to Install some media on the navigation system and I didn’t do this in Ready mode. Stupid..

Could it be that the Battery is already discharged to a point where it will not power up the start procedure?

I have a CTEK charger.

Can I recharge from the engine compartment or how do I charge the 12 v Battery?

Thanks to all since this is kind of a emergency.

You can charge from under the bonnet, there is a positive terminal in the upper right fusebox under a red lid. Negative you can attach to whatever bare metal you can find (there is also a designated spot somewhere on the left side of the engine compartment if your CTEK clamps reach there).

EDIT: Well, this would apply to a newer Yaris of some sort, not sure on 2016 specifics but I'm pretty sure the manual will tell you how to jump it.

Great so no need to charge directly on the 12 v Battery under the rear seat?

Yes I found an instruction on where to find the + and - terminals.

I will try they and see if I get to start the car.

15 mins is not enough to deplete a good 12v Battery after a long drive the previous night. Did you recently acquired the car? It probably was not driven/charged regularly from previous owners. Had my Yaris hybrid for 5 years, also a 2016, driven regularly and not had a single Battery issue.

Done more than 15mins in acc mode without ready mode on quite a number of occasions, no problem. Let's hope a slow charge can bring back life in your one. Use a voltmeter to measure it regularly when not in use and can report back here, some clue up members can advise further on the state of it.

There is one more thing before panic. If the car was sat in acc or ON mode but not ready mode or after replacing 12v Battery it may not start first time but you need to switch off from the start stop button and try again.
Sometimes the car may not see the key is there too. There a few occasions that may look like dead 12v Battery where actually it’s not. You can recharge your Battery from either under bonnet jump start point or directly on the battery terminals.
Check, charge, try start and re start , make sure you have stepped properly on the brake pedal and let us know. 👌

Have you tried placing the key near the button, you should hear the steering lock - the Battery in the fob has died

if you can lock/unlock the car and the interior light comes on, it's not likely the 12v Battery

The Battery was low and now charging.

I tried to hold the key near the start button and luckily the steering unlocked and I was able to start the car and get it in Ready mode.

So new Battery in the key?

But funny I can still lock and unlock the car with the key in a distance? But I guess starting unlocking the steering and starting procedure requires more power from the key fob?

Not true. You can certainly get the interior lights on, hit start and get all the dash lights on, yet fail to get Ready mode.

My first experience,  it was like Blackpool.  The second time I switched off, set my new charger,  and waited a few minutes.

ah ok, the keyless has turned its self off if you have the touch2 to go into Vehicle - customizations and turn it back on, low voltage does that - the 12v Battery is borderline, if it's the original Battery it's getting towards the end of its life

If it's a hybrid, it uses an AGM Battery that lives under the back seat S34B20R

Yes I have the touch 2 to go.

i just tried my spare key and it does the same way - I have to hold both keys near the start button to initiate the start.

I have charged the 12 v Battery to almost full scale at the CTEK charger.

So what is next?

How do I customize the keys back to working?

Do I need a new Battery? I am pretty sure it is the original.

Yes it’s a hybrid.

All of this is after having recharged the 12 v Battery

The keys need to be hold near the start button.

As flash22 says, the keyless entry system has switched itself off - It seems this happens if the 12v gets discharged on some cars?

You should be able to just re-enable it, but check the manual for the procedure for yours - On my Mk4, I'd need to put the car in Ready mode then hunt through the infotainment screen's settings menu for the setting, but I don't know if that's the same on the Mk3 or if there's another menu you need to set it through.

I don’t think I have keyless entry.

I need to lock and unlock the doors physically with the key not enough just to have the key in the pocket.

I don’t seem to find the setting in the menu  for the initialization if the keys?

Can somebody help?

The easiest way to find out if your car comes with keyless entry is to look at the door handles. If they have two straight cuts or black button then it has , if nothing then it hasn’t. If it has and it’s not activated, this can be reactivate with Carista obd 2 , or other scan tools.
Blue car no keyless entry and the white one with keyless.

It doesn’t have.

So it’s no about the keyless entry.

I still don’t know why of a sudden I can’t start the car with my key in the car, which I used to until today, but need to hold it near to the start button?

I can lock and unlock the car so the transponder seems to work.

There are at least two, possibly three systems in play. The transponder is passive - no Battery involved.  Same as a bank card.  That's what operates when holding the key near the button. Nothing to do with unlocking the car. Probably all cars have this now even without remote unlocking, where the physical key is used to open doors and turn on the ignition. No correct transponder, no start.

There are then two active modes needing Battery power at the key.  For remote lock/ unlock you push the button and it sends the command. The other mode is keyless entry where the key is always active and validates unlocking the door without buttons being pressed.

You need to evaluate what is happening, or not, with these things in mind.

On my MX5, having to hold the key near the start button is a classic case of the fob Battery needing replacement.  Remote lock/unlock etc all work, but a near end of life fob Battery means you have to touch the key to the start button in order to get it to fire up.

Good idea

I just replaced the Battery with a new one in my remote but without success.

I still have to hold it near to the start button.

I got it back working again.

It seemed to be that I under My Toyota on the internet had to disengage the function “Smart entry and startsystem” and download to the car.

I hope it will stay this way for good 😀.

This function may return to normal after 4 on and off the car. It happens after disconnecting the 12v Battery, low voltage etc , or as you did longer in ON or acc mode.

What do you mean by this function returns to normal?

I had to disengage the function smart entry but I really don’t know if is a coincidence.

But for now it is back to normal what is used to be.
