Intermittent rough/no start T25

Hi all!

Quick question for some input. My 2004 T25 D4 VVTI 2.0 (1AZ-FSE) has had more trouble starting lately.

Issue

Takes 3/4 x 10/15 second cranks to start it. When started runs beautiful, no issues at all.

Sometimes starts perfectly.

Sometimes takes 1 x 10-15 second crank to start it.

If started again after just stopping, no issues at all.

Info

No fault codes OBD.

Crank test when issues: 3450ms, 10.24V crank voltage.

Multimeter Battery voltage test (off and idle) cant remember voltages, was within spec.

Crank test when no issues: 360ms , 10.50 V crank voltage

Charging test:

- Load voltage: 14.49 V

- Unload voltage: 14.64 V

- Ripple: 8mV

  • Sometimes some (maaaaybe very vaugly) blue-ish smoke, mostely grey-ish/white) but no large quantities. Never smokey when driving (expect when winter/cold).
  • Little to no oil losses. Same with coolant
  • Sparkplugs replaced about 1 year a go. Did drive maybe 60K, would be soon though..
  • No work done in the meantime

Theory

  • Battery seems fine.
  • Starter could be the issue, weird that the issue occurs so randomly though.
  • Fuel? Doubt it is the fuel filter, pump. Priming lines issue? Loosing fuel in lines due to bad valve?
  • Leaky valve seals/ piston rings that cause oil to enter chambers? Blue smoke/starting issues? Weird that sometimes the car starts after 4 days without issues, but sometimes doesn't start after <8 hours after last drive.

  1. Will try to add some starting fluid (or some other flammable stuff) to see if fuel is the issue.
  2. Can check sparkplugs for spark, but if the car runs it runs fine..
  3. Battery terminals look fine, cleaned them a bit extra.

Car is going for MOT and a large service soon, so maybe the garage can find it. In the meantime, any suggestions are welcome.

Ill update the topic if issue resolved of course.

Thanks!

Update:

SOLVED

Car started worse and worse, untill it didnt start at all.

Camshaft/Crankshaft sensor was at the top of my list, but that wasnt it.

Spraying some fluid into the air intake, the car did turn over and started.

Determined it to be fuel pump not running.

Measured all the possible connections and cables from Battery to pump. All fine, just one odd reading from the Circuit Open Relay to fuel pump (<12V).

Replaced the COR and issue is resolved.

So, crank no start > no fuel > check/replace (fuel system) relays. Easy and cheap!
