I've got the code P1271 (fuel regulation circuit - Edu drive). From reading other posts here it sounds like it's the EDU itself. If I'm lucky, it might just be a shabby ground connection (had that with voltage regulator). My question: how much driving can I do before fixing it? Right now I'm halfway accros Europe, going to see a mechanic tomorrow. Plan A is to get it fixed here and now, but if they do the 'let's replace the fuel pump and all the injectors' antics, I need a plan B.

Thanks

Thanks. When I tested it, it was borderline: arround 1.4ohms. I concluded it was still OK and blamed it on the accuracy of my multimeter, expecting a failed one to either have almost 0 or kiloohms... The Toyota garage diagnosed it as 'resistance of the pressure regulator out of spec', with no more info. They offered to fix it for a cool £1.5k by replacing the whole rail assembly. I paid for the diagnostic and thanked them for their service, as the car itself is not worth more than 3k. Since then I've done 100 miles with no sign of degraded performance, and fuel consumption going from 43mpg to 50mpg!

The link you've posted seems to indicate this system is of secondary importance, especially when driven with a light foot.

I'm planning to either find a reputable local diesel garage that will source and replace the sensor only, or drive it back home and do it there. I'm conscious that Toyota only sells the whole assembly, and not sensor itself...

One more thing: in addition to P1271 that my tool reported, they reported C1201 as well.

C1201 is just an ABS code, clear it and see if it comes back, it could be related to the EDU throttle control

yes, it's a complete rail assembly the Pressure discharge valve is common to the 1AD and 2AD, the part No. for the rail is 23810-0R040, replaced by 23810-0R041

some light reading

Thanks a lot. I'll need to get the complete rail assembly in that case, not just the sensor...

IIRC the rail is under 1000-1800 bar (27,000 psi), making it fuel tight is the issue, that is a job for a specialist with the correct equipment to test, that is more than likely why is supplied complete

Official fuel pressure specs for the 1AD

Fuel pressure                     Normal condition 27000 to 45000 kPa (Idling)
Target common rail pressure     Normal condition          32000 to 200000 kPa (engine running)
