Noise from power steering pump

I have a 2016 Avensis which has recently started making a whining noise when cornering. A local garage confirmed the steering pump is making a noise but couldn't source a refurbished replacement, and advised that a new one would be very expensive.  They also said that the fault might be due to swarf in the system and even if the pump was replaced, the swarf could get into the new one and damage it. They didn't seem to think the contaminated fluid could easily be flushed out and replaced. They advised to leave it alone and monitor it, they know of vehicles with similar symptoms that have gone on for years without the problem getting worse.

Should I take it to a power steering specialist or follow their advice ?

These cars have electric power steering. AIUI electric power steering system have electric motors that act directly on the steering rack, and there are no hydraulics (unless Toyota are using some kind of hybrid electric/hydraulic steering system). Happy to be corrected if I have any of this incorrect.

One of my work colleagues had a Mini that had a noisy power steering motor; Sounded a lot like servo whine.

As above, the power steering is electric and has no pump or fluid. I'd find a different garage!

Toyota cars are usually reliable and not popular within garages and mechanics. Many especially in uk has no clue how to work on them and how to service or diagnose them. Best place to visit when having a trouble is a dealer or YouTube - Google. Type your problem and solution will come up. Then you can run the checks by yourself or go to a dealer or if you go to a random garage ask them first few questions as you did and if they told you power steering pump, just walk away.
You can record the sound and share here, perhaps can get better suggestions.
Good luck
