Should I sell my Yaris and get a Auris??

Hi everybody,

I have a Yaris TR VVT-I Automatic 2009 with 30,000 miles on the clock.

I'm thinking of selling it and getting a Auris hybrid 2010 or newer. I have approximately £7,500 and so obviously any Auris hybrid for that amount is going to have high mileage.

My question is, am I silly to consider doing this??

Please give me your thoughts

Hi Kay and welcome.
Before we start a comparison we need to equalise the condition of both cars and accept that both cars are in good shape with no rust, no mechanical issues, and both drives fine.
The Auris is a class above, it is more refined, it’s bigger , feels bigger too.
If you get a T Spirit it will be fully loaded with useful extras like reversing camera, electric mirror with fold function, fog lights, cruise control, auto lights and auto wipers plus leather inserts on the interior and soft plastics. These comes with keyless entry and push button start.
Both automatics, the hybrid is the best auto you can get.

Driving cost and maintenance:

- in the hybrid you will be getting 50+mpg , depending on driving condition and usage even 60mpg is possible real world.
Service is 10k miles or 12 months and it’s as simple as it can be, oil and filter. Cabin filter, wipers  etc., the usual things.
Spark plugs at 60k intervals,  coolant in both engine and inverter ( the electrical part) every 50k miles, transmission fluid same time as spark plugs.

There are two major and important things that needs to be done on these cars every 100k miles , egr system clean and Battery cooling fan clean.

That’s pretty much all. Definitely not much more expensive than a regular petrol car. One negative though, these cars  are usually target for catalytic converter theft, something to be aware off. There are ways to deter but that we will leave for later.
Auris is the better car from both,  Is it the better choice for you, this I can’t really tell.

It all depends if you need the size of the auris, otherwise the Yaris hybrid will get better mpg. Another thing others can add more input is what sort of mileage u cover annually or whether you do many short trips to the shops, driving distance and pattern etc.

Thank you to you both for your replies.

The thing I keep thinking is, does it make sense to sell my 2009 30k petrol automatic Yaris to buy a slightly newer Auris hybrid that's going to have alot more miles on the clock or do I stick with the low mileage Yaris?!?!

Hi, if your Yaris is in a good shape and you are are happy with it, just stick with it until dies and then buy a brand new one.
Any used car purchase brings along a risk of being a lemon and old cars warranty doesn’t really work well. If me, I will keep the Yaris. 👍

You know your car well, it's good and reliable. Unless you really want a hybrid and bigger car, sometimes sticking to what u got is the better option. Doing low mileage, short trips and not driving regularly isn't so good for a hybrid due to the small 12v Battery, hence asking your driving pattern and usage.

Like above save up until one day buy a new/nearly new. The MK4 Yaris is a great car. In a few years Toyota may offer 42 months 0% payment again, like they 18months ago.

Well, each used car is unique and different from others. 100k miles can be nothing, and the car still new like but also can be a complete trash.
Best to do the usual used car purchase test and checks before putting any deposit. Used approved also means nothing and it’s not a warranty for a quality car. You can do an MOT history check and look for any advisory notes and failures, rust or anything unusual. Check if the car has accidents, paint work done , if the car has original catalytic converter, and if any protection is added. Ask when and where was serviced, check service history, two keys etc. At this mileage the car may benefit of full service including all coolant, transmission fluid changes and egr system clean up, plus hybrid Battery cooling fan clean up procedures.
That’s all pretty much.
Good luck
