Are you just starting it right away?

I found with my old Mk1 D4D, more so in winter, it had an easier time starting if I turned the key to position 2, waited for the glow plug light to go out, then started it. If it was especially cold, I'd do the same thing, but instead of starting it, flick it back to I and then to II again to give it a 2nd round of glow plug heating - That was usually enough to make it start within a couple cranks not matter the temperature.

If the Battery hasn't been changed while you've owned the car that's more likely the culprit tho' - The batteries in diesels are very beefy and tend to last longer than petrol ones, but they still go after a while, and things like starting issues and weird electrical gremlins can be a sign of that!

Another possibility is the starter itself, but AFAIK there aren't any known common issues with them, unlike its bigger 2 litre brother!

Thank you both. It's been a while since diesel filter has been done and Battery been in a while though on testing its looking fine.

I always let the glow light go out before i attempt to start . I'm hoping to change filter on Thursday and will let you know the results.

The Battery is tricky to check as it'll seem fine and only show the voltage sag under heavy loads like cranking the engine, so whoever tests it needs to do a proper load test, not just measure the voltage and declare it okay like a lot of them do.

Do you have a voltage at the heater plugs?.

Fuel filter if giving a problem will also show up when its starved of fuel going up a hill.

Will need to check that too Derek. Will look tomorrow and check voltage.
