Hi all. I bought a 2010 Prius recently cover 90000 miles.

The car gives buzzing sound almost every time brake pedal is pressed. Is that normal? How frequent is considered normal? Thank u  all.

Is this buzzing sound while you are moving and braking?

If it is then this is normal.

It is the electric regeneration system working.

I think it sounds similar to when the London Underground train is slowing down.

And yes and no.
Usually you hear this noise when you open the drivers door, when you press the brake to start the car or sometimes when you use the brakes, but not always.

If you hear this noise always means your brakes likely needs service, you have stuck slider pins and or callipers pistons that prevent freely moving of the pads on the rear brakes. Your rear brakes are only electronically controlled and the brake booster pump works harder to compress the pads against the disc. You ,at also have uneven wear on the pads.  A tale signs are red dust on the wheels, check that first.

Another time you can hear it is when you go over bumps, when you press brakes harder in an emergency braking, or just push the pedal further, when any of the wheels lose contact with the ground and abs or stability control is activated. , all that is normal and it is how the system works in Toyota hybrids.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

The buzz is not always there. Its only when i apply brakes and that too, not every time i break. More noticed  in city drive with stop and go traffic - again-it happens only when i press brake pedal fully to bring the car to a complete stop

Ill check the wheel for rust as u told. I guess using genuine Toyota brake disc and pads helps in the long run.

Hi,

you likely have no problems with your brakes but if they haven’t been serviced recently last two years for example it’s a good idea to get them serviced. Parts replace only if they are worn out, otherwise just clean and checks.
For the brake parts no need to be original Toyota. You can buy aftermarket a good quality at much cheaper prices. Blueprint discs are good, or febi , ATE, Bosch, Textar,  they do pads too. I personally use blueprint discs with ebc pads and they work very well, and last ages. But I service them every year.
