Does the 1.8 2SR-FXE have a timing chain

Posted

Only the V8 and older V6 pre 2008 still use timing belt. The belt last at least 120k miles under normal driving.

2ZR-FXE Is the same as other 2ZR except the VVTI mechanism and timing for intake cycles are different. It is very old robust engines with basic port injectors and 39% thermal effeciency. The highest without direct injection.

Fo 5-8k miles oil change interval if you want to keep it well and doesn't consume engine oil after 100k miles. Don't do over 10k miles, and use a good long life IV certified  oil 0w-20 either from VW 508/509, Dexos 1 gen3,  etc if you do 10k miles interval.  Those oil has better minimum standard than Toyota API SP or GF-6ASN_SP_Dexos1g3_508.thumb.jpeg.d56e5f130a943756093866e1f94927ea.jpeg

After some miles it will start to consume oil no matter how often you had been changing it in the past. But if you look after it and don’t push it too hard it will serve  you well long time.

Wow, the last Toyota engine I know of that had a belt was the 2 litre 1CD-FTV used in the Verso and Corolla!

I just gave up my old petrol 1.8 Avensis after 13 yrs.

I always change the oil every 6,000 mile with good oil and had over 250,000 km on it, it averaged 40 mpg and didn't use any oil even though it was listed as one of the oil burners that had a design fault until 2005 . I did occasionally add Luckas as an upper cylinder lubricant to the petrol but who know if it would have been the same without it.

Old school like myself used Upper C Lubricant years ago which is lacking today. If I can get that out of my hybrid I will be happy

The V6 in RX and GS rarely consume oil even beyond 200k miles. Some engines consume oil more and very sensitive to long oil change intervals. Those include 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5L cylinders.  The 2.4L before 2007 has less tendency consuming oil after 100k miles.  The 1.5L in Yaris C and Prius2 is durable and very minimal consume oil. Mine was less than 100cc per 5000 miles. My current Auris consume no oil and already 95k miles although I spent 3000 miles in Alps every year.

Each car been driven differently, different temperatures, different engine loads, speeds, fuels and oils etc. although the similarities between is that if there is a friction there is a wear which means sooner or later any ice will start burning oil. The car care nut shows cars with tip top oil changes at max 5k miles intervals that consumes oil like crazy?! The oil change intervals matters of course, but if you stay within the manufacturer specs you won’t get trouble. Unless the engine is one of these that has a design fault and oil burning is unavoidable.
My car also didn’t burn any oil at all up to around 130-150k miles, then started slowly to consume and progressively increase consumption.
At 248000 miles oil consumption is probably around 1-2ltrs all together with the oil leak per 10k miles which I will count as normal wear from daily use.
Oil changes always been within these 10k miles, even way before. There had been cars like mine that burn oil like locomotives since early days of ownership when new or recently new, my one its still fine.

Tony's car is top 10% for the 2010-2012 2ZR-FXE engines. You drive quiet moderately in acceleration and miticulous maintenance including regular EGR valve cleaning.  The newest gen 2ZR-FXE has less problems with oil consumptions but will  consume engine oil too if the owner does not maintain or abusive driving.

I also believe the 5000k miles/6 months interval is overkill if we drive in relatively normal 50/50 highway/city and western europe weather.  But it must be a good synthetic oil with actual certification from API, Dexos, or better grade.  I personally do 8 months/8k months oil change interval with 0w-20 Toyota API SN oil before.  But now I use certified VW 508/509 since they are easily available and often some online stores sell them cheaper. Alternatively, Mobil 1 0w-20 XP2 is an  excellent alternative and also certified 508/509. Dexos1/3, and Ford.

I also know from Mike that the pre June 2006 Corolla with 1.6L engine also have defective piston/rings design and consume oil no matter how we maintain them.

So, do max 10k miles interval/1 year and adjust depends on how our driving condition.  Gets the best certified oil but cheap. we do not need butique oil like Amsoil.
