CHR v Yaris Cross

Hi all,

Was thinking about changing my C-HR for a Yaris cross recently, but was wondering if anyone had done the same?

I understand they are different cars and my C-HR is Excel spec, so having same features in the Cross is a must.

From an aesthetics pov, the C-HR is much better imo, but looks alone are not the only attributes I look for. Previous experience with owning French built Toyota’s hasn’t been good either.

Any feedback would help - either way.

Thanks.

The wife has a Yaris and I keep buying her the same car when it needs changing, she loves them and only £30 road tax, I had a Mokka, yes sh$%  name and I was looking at the C-HR, I liked them when they first came out, still do but when push came to shove I bought a Lexus CT200h.

I had a CT200 before the CHR and only swapped it due to height of car.

Lexus are the ultimate in cars imo. The CT was flawless and had it 9 years without any issues at all.

Like the look of UX and new LBX. When we move to one car, it will be one of those.

No long time experience with either, but I was already set on buying a new CHR but figured I'll give the Yaris Cross a spin cos there was a test drive car at the yard. I think it shares some of the quirky looks but was much more practical regardless.

After test driving both I've no longer considered the CHR and just ordered a new Yaris Cross. I didnt consider the 1,8 or 2l engine to do anything for me the 1,5l of Yaris wouldnt (I come from an Aygo X so im not afraid of some revs/noises lol).

Things might change with the facelift, but I thought that just about everything felt much better to me in the Yaris Cross other than like performance maybe was in CHR favor naturally.

Chr is a class above car to compare to Corolla, Prius etc and it feels that way where Yaris is a tiny one , looks, sounds and feels like tiny car. This is the biggest difference between. Both have + and -. I prefer the look of Yaris cross even over the new baby Lexus, but the chr especially the new coming one will be the best and most refined new Toyota available to buy in UK.

I'm with Cruxis on this one.  I tested both the CHR and YC back to back and tbh preferred the YC.  The CHR cost a bit more and didn't offer anything particularly superior, other than different styling, which is a personal thing of course.  Also at the time I tested (a year ago - ish), the YC had all the very latest tech and the CHR didn't, so it might not have been totally fair comparison.  Anyway, I ordered the YC Excel and have been delighted with it! 😃

Yeah, I felt the CHR was also very dated in it's interior that played a part. The added practicality is probalby what won me over. Next one might just be a facelifted CHR, who knows! I really like the interior of that too. I feel as a car the CHR and YC are very much my alley and wouldnt go wrong with either choice. I guess I also wanted to feel a little bit more special, as around here every second car on the road is a CHR

It's in the eye of the beholder and the CHR doesn't cut it for us.  We went from the Corolla to the Cross based on practicality and higher seating position.

Toyota have worked their magic making a smaller Cross larger inside than the Corolla.   There are features of the Cross that could be better: boot light, rear passenger light, from passenger foot lights, carpet rather than just mats

I find the Cross steering wheel switches better than the Corolla and the Smart Connectcis better too.   Why it does not have dynamic reversing lines I don't know.

Not driven neither, the chr does look sporty but is not as practical with the boot space. The better seat height is also a plus for the cross as well lower cost. When the time comes to change my recent new normal Yaris, will look to get the 130 cross, which should be available.

@Roy124 have u changed the interior lights to led? That was the first thing I did to the Yaris.

I did exactly the same as Roy @Roy124 , changed from Corolla to Yaris Cross and agree with what he says entirely, good and bad points. I am presuming that you are pleased with the difference in the lights @Mojo1010 , as it is something that definitely needs improving. Out of interest Mojo, which LEDs did you get?

I see you also ordered the best colour 😎

Got these black ones, about £5 for 10x from 5 years ago. Used 3 for last car, 3 on current car. It's good. s-l1600.thumb.jpg.5bc75425f403d9df2cf3fdd2a6bc2560.jpgScreenshot_2023-08-17-22-04-35-806_com.alibaba.aliexpresshd.thumb.jpg.7e6b5ff353901035b997ee907027d763.jpgThis is very cheap on Ali express if you can wait for a couple of weeks. Got these too, although have not tried.

I simply cant get past the front end styling of the Yaris Cross around the radiator grill. it just seems toy like.

Added to the fact that a CH-R, especially with the 2.0 engine is worlds apart performance wise.

It's definitely the CH-R for me! although as has been said each to their own.

Know what u mean toy like. 130hp cross (when it comes out) will do just fine, after all it's a economical car.

I prefer the current shape tbh. Understand it will be a far better car, but not tempted by new one for now.

I haven't changed the interior lights. Which fittings take the bulbs shown above.  I certainly will not change the passenger mirror light.   Drives me mad; SWMBO puts on warpaint before we go out.  Before we are out of the drive she's at it again.   Before we arrive yet again.

I am after improved performance too though I want better economy rather than better acceleration.

Performance comes in different flavours.

CHR is nice to driver but not to the rear seat passenger. The window is too small and low head room, easy to get sick. It will be great as two seats vehicle in my point of view. I felt sick last time on an Uber CHR, it was just 15min driving in city.

The YC Excel City Pack option gives you a PVM but reverts to the (older) 8 inch screen that has Dynamic Reversing Lines.

How often do you sit in the back of your car. I very seldom carry passengers in mine, and when my granddaughter is in the booster seat, she's too busy watching the iPad on the seat in front of her. All the adults I have had in the back have said they were fine.

Spot on, i cannot remember  the last time i carried more than two people in the car, if you regularly carry more than two and you think the rear is cramped buy a car more suited to your needs

Its the same when reviewers slate cars for smaller boot space than competitors, how many of us regularly carry more than a few small items in the boot, i think the only time mine is used any where near full capacity is when we do the monthly shop.
