Selection of high beam causes light cluster to go off ?

On the Avensis 2006, drivers side light and dipped headlight are a bit dull......

 

More concerning is that if I switch to high beam

 

The drivers side light cluster goes OFF altogether

 

no illumination at all on drivers side

 

Passenger side is nicely alight - all good

 

I took a quick look at the halogen lamp  that does both dipped and full beam - looks ok

 

tested on pp3 battery  - working

 

Tomorrow I will check for anything obvious that could be causing disparity

 

earthing

 

fuses

 

relay?

 

Any thoughts welcome
