New RAV4 PHEV - few things to highlight!

Just for alls info, I had a 2021 RAV4 PHEV dynamic since oct 2021, managed to order (from dealer) a dynamic Premium which I believe was a cancelled customer order.  Order placed wiith Dealer in May 23, car collected yesterday.  2 parts to this email - first part on car specification, 2nd on differences between old and new car

Specification - in May, dealer sent me the dynamic premium spec and when the car arrived, the two did not match.  Now, dynamic premium doesnt come with HUD, ventillated seats or electric passenger seat or memory drivers seat.  But it did still come with the panoramic roof and the JBL sound system.  It also has the new dashboard.  So my advice is to check any spec of a car you might have on order as you may be dissapointed - I asked for photos when the car arrived at dealers and noticed the ventillated seat buttons were missing so I was able to get them to check all missing items and negociate a discount on the agreed deal before i set off to collect.  I cant say i am overly happy with the situation but the roof is brilliant and the new dash is much more modern.  The dealer insists Toyota had not issued any revised specs for the car so they used the exisitng available material.

Differences - so apart from the main spec items, things to note - the USB plug by wireless charger is same but all others are now USB-C (two in centre console and 2 in rear), the new dashboard display is more configurable and looks much better, the quality of the infotainment screen is much better - I am not sure if the JBL upgrade always came with a clearer screen (with no buttons) but certainly this is much better than the one in my 2021 dynamic.  The reversing camera is much clearer  - again not sure if this is due to a new camera or the new car having JBL. The lane assist is much better in this new car - it seems to hold you in the middle of the lanes where as old car always wanted to drive along either left or right lines.  Also, on new car I can lock remotely from MyT - old car i couldnt.  Only other thing to note is that the wireless charger in the new car seems to work much better, the old car one hardly ever worked and the amber light just used to flash - you had to be very precise with phone placement, new one you just throw it in there and it seems to charge.

The JBL sounds are much better than the standard, not amazing really for such a value of car but definately a step up.  and the roof, its lovely, the tilt is fine for motorway driving with no intrusive noise really, the slide part is a little bit loud on motor way as you would expect but tootling around in the sun.... awesome!

Good job you checked it out first, I take it the dealer did not advise you of changes to specifications?

No they didn't.  When they got the car I asked for photos as I was excited and I noticed the switches for the front ventilated seats were not there.  I then had them check all the specs they provided and it all started coming out.  They insist Toyota have not notified them of any spec changes but there obviously has been a big change, keeping in mind I don't think you can order anything other than base spec now but there could be a few people who have waited a year for delivery who could be dissapointed, like I was, which is why I am highlighting the changes.

I don't know if the reduced spec only applies to the dynamic premium , I suspect so.  It would actually be easier to describe my car as the dynamic with a moon roof and JBL sounds rather than a premium with lots of bits missing!!

I rather suspect that this is the point. The Dynamic Premium was deleted from the list of available grades quite some time ago. They stopped being built in Japan so all that dealers could offer those who had ordered one was a Dynamic with some of the premium options. That may have been why the person who had previously ordered the car cancelled the order.

So, your car is a Dynamic with panoramic roof and JBL sounds ...

The switch to USB-C for the power outlets happened across the range a while back now - USB-C can deliver more power.

As regards the previous order yes either deleted because of change of spec or they got tired of waiting but if the byer bought it as a Dynamic Premium they would be in for a nasty shock when they came to sell it.

I understand what you are saying but I bought a dynamic premium from the dealer, that is what is described on the paperwork, that is what I was sold, not a dynamic with extra bits. I am merely highlighting as if others have been sold a dynamic premium by their dealer they will have the same outcome as myself.  Even now the dealer insists the car is a dynamic premium and that they hadn't been notified of any changes by Toyota GB .

I think someone (the dealer) is being disingenuous….. simple questions: when was the Dynamic Premium last listed as a specific model? What was the DP spec at that point? Are customer’s who ordered a DP prior to being dropped from the listings getting the specification described at the point of order?

Suzuki facelift is fitted with a 55 litre fuel tank, I would imagine the new RAV4 will be the same.

The RAV 4.5 HEV and PHEV has always had a 55l tank. I can't comment on the Across but as it's built on the same production line I rather suspect that the same has always applied too ...

Agreed!   Chronology ... 🙂

USB-C power ports were introduced to MY22 cars.

The Dynamic Premium grade was discontinued in October 2022. So, the last Dynamic Premium would be a MY22 car.

The MY23 RAV4 gets multimedia and safety upgrades ... these include new multimedia systems and a customisable new digital driver’s instrument display.

Since Chris has "the new dashboard display is more configurable and looks much better, the quality of the infotainment screen is much better - ... with a clearer screen (with no buttons) but certainly this is much better than the one in my 2021 dynamic" it sounds to me as though he has a MY23 car.

And if that is the case any competent dealer really should know about it. (All the information comes from the Toyota UK media site and magazine.)

From when I ordered mine the order shows its a dynamic with optional Pan roof and JBL, the dealers seemed to have very little info on the cars, not sure if its any better now as its like shouting into a void finding anything out from them since the order was placed, I'm due to pick mine up in August..

There was suppose to be a GR sport version of the PHEV is that not coming to the uk ?

As I understand, 'GR Sport' is simply the new name for 'Dynamic'. The only PHEV grade available to build today is a MY23 Design - you can't order a MY23 Dynamic. Things may well change 'shortly' when the MY24 grades are announced ... (I know nothing, just speculating 😉 )

It may replace Dynamic in the range (I personally doubt it) however as reported elsewhere on the Forum it is differently trimmed and configured.

Saw it in my dealership last week. Need to go back and check it over properly as I was in a rush when I gave it the once over. Looks great.

I don't think it is.

GR sport seats, the front valance is different, wheels are different, stiffer suspension, and it looks like it has some US goodies like pan cam, digital rear view, but I couldn't see heated or cooled seat switches. However, it was a brief look over in the dealership.

Under 3 month lead time according to sales manager.

As, I said, I know nothing but when we look at the grades available for the Yaris, Yaris Cross, Corolla, C-HR and RAV4 (HEV) we see grades as:

  • Icon
  • Design
  • GR Sport
  • Excel

There is no longer a Dynamic to be found. Whether this a relatively simple renaming or the introduction of a more dramatic sporty grade I have no idea at all - but it feels like marketing to me. 😉

  • 3 weeks later...

I had made an online order for Dynamic Premium with sunroof in April 2022. I received a Dynamic with the sun roof in August 2023 as the Dynamic Premium has been discontinued. I enquired before collection if there was going to be any change to my ordered specifications. I was informed that only the HUD was not being provided. However, after collection I have noted that the following specification were missing from my original order:

1) Power sliding and reclining front passenger seat
2) Electric heated door mirrors
3) Memory function for driver seat
4) 9 speaker JBL Premium sound system
5) Trailer Sway Control (TSC)
6) Driver attention alert
7) Driver and front passenger ventilated seats
I am very disappointed, I would appreciate if anyone has been in a similar situation and has got any favourable outcome or resolution.
Kindly update

Did you have the HUD delete info in writing? If not you are on a hiding to nothing. I knew about 1/3/4/7 but am surprised about the others, especially heated mirrors and TSC. The latter is very important for me. However I am lucky insofar as I have a genuine dynamic premium.

Items 2, 5, and 6, are pretty major items to be missing (OK...6 isn't strictly neccessary at all, but that's not the point). I wouldn't be happy at all!!!

Item 2 is pretty much standard on every car on the market today.

Item 5 is a pretty serious safety system for trailers, so for that to be missing is a big deal.

Wow, you've been screwed by Toyota 😮 I've been there.

When I went to collect the car, they were like, "Oh, by the way, there's been a price hike since you ordered it, and now it's 2k more. Oh I probably forgot to email you about it ... Do you still want it or not? LOL

Their level of professionalism is scraping the bottom.

The HUD, 2 and 4 are essential to me. I'd probably have rejected the car if I hadn't received notification of specification change. The HUD has been brilliant.

If it's any consolation, before I ordered the R4P Dynamic Premium, I had actually ordered a Volvo XC60 PHEV, top end spec. They (Volvo rather than my company car supplier) emailed me about a month later to say the car is being built and could I just sign for the spec. I was immediately suspicious  as this is not how it works with our company car scheme. I asked if anything had changed and they said oh no we don't think so. I said why has the Driver Assistance package changed to Driver Assist? 4 letters removed from the last word. Oh, it's just the blind spot indication system is no longer provided because of supply chain issues. So, it has changed then? Ermmmm. Yes. What else is missing? Oh, ermm, it doesn't come with rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian warning, etc etc. So, you're selling me a Volvo without the safety features? And pretended nothing had changed with slight of hand renaming the package from Driver Assistance to Driver Assist? Bit sneaky no, hoping folks would miss that on a spec check where you didn't provide a breakdown under each package. Errr, you're criminals, goodbye. Order cancelled and apologies forthcoming from the Northern fleet manager.

Shocker. Why would they think anyone would be happy with any of these shenanigans? 🤷🤦
