Now on my 3rd. Corolla touring sport hybrid and all 3 have suffered with 'juddering' on the bottom 1/3rd of the drivers [UK reg RHD] side wiper on its down stroke.

Wipers blades are manufacture blades.

Screen clean.

Is this a design fault as I worry it will damage the wiper linkage?

If the screen is clean and the blades are in good shape the cause is probably the the arms not at the correct angle (parallel to the screen). The easy fix is the use mole grips (and a cloth to stop damage) and twist them one way or the other. It’s trial and error but usually works, it’s an old trick of the trade.

That is correct about twisting the arms but on so new car very unlikely to be a reason why the wipers does that. If me I will start with cleaning the window properly, using high quality screen wash mixture like Preston or Similar.
Where do you wash your car might hold the answer to the problem. Cheap  corners car washes often spray something like a liquid wax after they rinse the car shampoo and then dry the car. This does nothing but off set the correct work of your wipers and cause similar issues plus really bad smears when driving in the rain. , kind of dangerous too. Of you like to try cleaning yourselves better do not clean the wiper rubber blades with strong cleaners , perhaps baby wipes, or pure water on microfibre cloth. The windscreen however you can use a lots of windows cleaner and wipe with microfibre cloth , then do final go with pure clean water spray and dry with clean microfibre towel. Keeping windows clean inside out and wipers to perform well it’s very tricky even to a trained valeters. 👍

Thank you both for taking the time to offer your solution.

I will take on board your views but can I just say that had this problem not been on all 3 of the T.S's that I have owned I would have been much more willing to take the 'mole grips' to the arms.

thank you.Jon P.

From reading around that I've done it seems to be a very common issue on the Corolla wipers. Apparently it's a design flaw where the spring tension in the blade itself (not the arm) isn't strong enough to put pressure on the windscreen and causes juddering and smearing. I've had the issue since new on my 2022 hatchback.

I use a windscreen coating (Soft99 Glaco Ultra) to alleviate the issue a little, and it does work very well, however the blades still smear.

The best solution seems to be aftermarket blades, which I haven't tried yet. Apparently the PIAA ones are really good as they last a lot longer and put more pressure across the whole length of the blade.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Ollie.Chambers.

Thank you for your reply. Helps to confirm my suspicions that it actually is a possible design fault.

Not sure how or where to contact the correct department within Toyota for their opinion.

Juddering is often caused by windshield contamination from wax, polish, or simply detergent and silicon from the road grims.  Just use Autoglym.  This polish is the only one works well removing etched fat and silicon. 99% Isopropanol also work if it is not too hardly etched.

Actually scratch removal compounds also work. i tried paint scratch removal compound from ALDI and it works almost as good as Autoglym. So, Autoglym also works in removing swirls clear coat.  I am just not bothered with swirl marks. It is better than making the clear coat thinner.
