Prius 2016 oil filter and fitting wrench

I'm going to do my own oil and filter change but need to check from UK owners that I get the right filter insert and the device to unscrew it, I can't seemingly buy the filter insert direct from Toyota, they don't list it so I am looking at one from  Euro car parts,  the make is Audura.

Also the tool to unscrew it, is it the same for all Gen4 models , i.e. 14 flutes or notches?  I really need info from someone who has changed the oil and filter themselves please.

Hello Tony,

thanks for replying

it's a fully disposable filter then and not one that takes a refill cartridge? that surprised me as some adds for the refill type show up to the year 2016, the chart on the advert you linked shows it's also the same filter for Gen 2 but not Gen 3  so I'll get one of those

I'll buy one of those tools as well

many thanks

Vic

Is your car Prius gen 4 from 2016 -2022? These has metal filter, fully disposable. If it’s Prius plus 2012-2022 or Prius gen 3 2010-2015 then has the paper cartridge oil filter. The tool will fit both but you need to have the right filter when doing the change. If unsure you can have look the engine, if it has aluminium valve cover it’s paper filter, if the valve cover is a black plastic it has metal filter. You can take a picture and share with us for example. Online catalogs are often wrong and misleading. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325143605796?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=nh5IESpNTTu&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=p34UK1z2T4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Thank you Tony,

Here is a photo of the engine, it has an aluminium cover so then it does have the cartridge type ?  My car is business plus, 2016

Hi,

this is gen4 Prius and it dies have metal filter and plastic valve cover.
Not a paper cartridge.
Here is your engine and filter how they look. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185675034369?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=C9HeyQy_T2C&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=p34UK1z2T4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
This silver plastic covers are sound proofing, I meant valve cover that is bolted to the engine.

I've got the car raised up on the front, fitted the tool on the filter housing and it's stuck solid, way more than usual and looks like the filter cartridge type to me as I can't see the disposable type.

I bought both types to be sure, but not sure how much pressure I can add without risk of a problem, maybe use an extension on the socket spanner

What about a photo of the offending filter?

Here is the filter housing and the now defunct screw on type I bought to be sure. I made an extension bar to get it off, hope the wife does not notice her garden lopper only has one handle now!  the paper element came with 2 rubbers but the smaller one was not found on mine and I checked in the drain bowl. I presume this goes under the cartridge?

The small rubber is for the drain on the underside of the filter, which you should drain before removal.

I'm not sure what you mean by drain on underside of filter?

Don't buy the cheap oil filter house removal tool, which looks nice from the photo, but actuallly will not fit to the house well and could damage your filter house particularly when it was over tightened. I bought one which was useless, Blueprint removal tool fits the filter  house very well.

If you look on the bottom of the filter housing, do you not see a big nut?

That filter fits loads of cars, some have just a black cap others have a cast alloy or plastic cap with an oil drain. Either type of filter is correct, paper element was used up to 11/2017

Paper element is 04152-37010 or 04152-YZZA6

Looking at the numerous videos of changing the Prius oil filter you can see when they open the box and take out the new filter that it shows only the large rubber gasket is provided, one man mentioning that many versions of Prius don't have the drain plug on the filter. I can't actually see the point as only a small amount spills when unscrewed

Hi,

The hybrids has only one rubber seal, the larger one,  and the small one is for other engines. Just make sure you place this one at exact location and tighten up to the specs 25Nm, this is usually when the filter housing stops rotating with moderate force. If you over tighten then will be very hard to undo at the next service.
To remove the socket afterwards you can wiggle up and down and it will pop up eventually.
I thought this engines 2016-> has the metal one, but it seems like I was wrong, apologies for that. The switch seems to be carried out at later date, perhaps 2019 update onwards.  Sorry for misleading information earlier.

Hello Tony,

it's not a problem, you were good enough to try and advise me and it's clear there are many variations in the Prius, most of the videos are on left hand drive cars, probably USA where loads of things are very different to the UK spec.

I found the removing tool did not fit on properly, far too tight and only fitted on a fraction which seems common with these, others report them being too loose and needing paper packing. However all is well and been for a short drive to be sure there are no drips.
