Hi. I'm looking at buying a 2014 Toyota Auris 1.8 hybrid Exclusive with 110.000 km. The car looks great and the price is great, but the service history does not look complete (see below). Should I stear clear?

2015 / 7527 km

2016 / 32121 km

2017 / 47417 km

2018 / 60589 km

2021 / 90246 km

2023 / 110306 km

Thanks!

Hello Daniel, the long gaps from 2018 - 2021 -2023 would make me a little uneasy. Did they change the oil between 2018 and 2021 but not get the service book stamped perhaps? It it were me, I think I would try to  find one with better service history. Cheers, Mark

Is it a private sale or dealer ?

I would tend to agree with Mark 👍

Check the actual production date. Is it on the end of 2014 or not? If it is registered after November 2014, it is probably good with already revised piston and piston rings + new head gasket design.   The pre October 2014 production has tendency to burn engine oil after roughly 120k Km.  So, avoid them.  I would rather spend another $1000 on facelift model of the same price with higher mileage ~ 140 k Km, but you are sure you get the best and last revision of the 3rd gen Hybrid 2ZR-FXE.  The facelift on Fall 2015 is actually much better in many ways including the option for the Safety Sense (collision avoidance).

But if you really thing it is really cheap, then it is indeed cheap for a reason.

At least you can do few steps that you can try:

1. Check the dipstick, the oil should be clear no stickiness

2. Open the Oil filler cap and peaks from it. It should be shiny with a bit of clear oil color. No varnish colors or sludges

3. Wipe the tail and area around the tailpipe ends, if it has a lot of carbon, that car already burn some oil.

At 110 000 Km, it is probably still running good, and you still can use it for another 100 000 km without any issue.   Just do more often oil change for the next few years. Probably eveyr 8 months/8k km instead of 16 000 Km.

Thank  you for your answer. The car was first registered in October 2013.

I'll have another look around for a newer model with higher mileage. Thanks.

Looks like it’s been doing 10000 km / yr recently or 6000 miles. That to me suggests a car being used mostly for short journeys. I would definitely want to see at least an annual oil change in those circumstances. That kind of usage is hard on an engine.
