Thought this was quite a well done economy test, plus the guy testing it has done more homework than the average reviewer and even explicitly states there are no cones or belts in the Corolla's CVT!

..... but how relevant is a comparison between a present day hybrid and a 12 year old diesel?

Relevant to what? He's just comparing his old car to his new car. There're lots of insights you can get from the results presented, but that'll be up to the viewer.

One thing I always note with such comparisons is, although the hybrid comes out on top, the gap isn't huge and it shows how good small diesels were - I made similar comparisons between my old Mk1 D4D and my Mk4, with the joke that it took 20 years of hybrid development for it to exceed my Mk1's performance and economy.

It's a good review of the cars tho', esp. the Corolla - I like that he notices the improved handling and instant response, and doesn't parrot that same tired thing about the engine droning, because it doesn't, because he's driving it properly!
