Hi All,

Looking for a bit of help. Ive repaired some rust/scratches on my Aygo. Ive managed to get a decent colour match for the base coat and applied clear Lacquer. Both were spray cans from Halfords (3-4 coats each). The final result has come out with a matt finish and rough to the touch. The Lacquer said it would produce a high gloss finish. How can I bring the new paint to a gloss finish to match the rest of the car?

The Lacquer said to wait a week before polishing/waxing for the best finish.

Ive ordered some Turtle Wax Ceramic Polish & Wax. Hoping this will bring out a glossy finish.

No expert on paint, but did you heat the rattle cans in hot water, NOT dry heat (safety reasons), before using? not so important to do when weather is warm , but is if on the coolish side.

Does the finish look like orange peel? Too thick coats etc.

what about prep ? It is 90%of painting,if rough, any amount of paint and lacquer will be rough too.

and no amount of polishing will cure that.

As I said,no expert here, but did do a lot of rattle cans a long time ago on old bangers.

others may well come along later with better advice .

it may be that you will have to strip and do it again to get a good finish.

Rough as in orange peel, leave it a week or so then use some cutting compound, you may need to knock it back with some 2000 grit then cut and polish

Hi All,

I think Im going to sand the Lacquer off and start again. Im going to do the bonnet first and see how I get on. I think I will be able to get a loan of an Orbital sander and a spraygun.

Where is the best place to get paint and Lacquer?

What would I need to get?

Ive got my colour code (1E0).

You could try www.paintnuts.co.uk enter your reg no and they’ll give the correct colour code etc? Also they have a good advice and tips section for help etc

Have found them to be very efficient in the past when looking for a Mazda colour match
