A bit unnerving

Went to Scarborough this afternoon and had set cruise control, excellent in traffic as it was easy , the car did it all, however, where it reached the dual carriageway I set cc to 70 , there’s a steepish hill called whitwell hill, ( some of you will know it) driving up that the revs went through the roof and seemed to accelerate really fast, it kinda caught me out a bit so I won’t be doing that again, any steep hill I will not rely on cc, otherwise it was very good on its first longish run..I guess this is the quirk of the cvt gearbox..

It's kinda weird - I haven't had many issues with the fixed cruise control; It does a good job of holding speed, but the radar cruise seems to second guess itself sometimes.

I sometimes find, mainly on sudden steep hills or when heavily loaded, the car doesn't raise the power quickly enough, so the speed drops, and when it drops too much the car panics and ramps up the power very suddenly trying to catch up with the set speed.

Not always tho', and the normal CC seems much less prone to this.

It just reinforces the point the driver aids need to be overrideable as they are nowhere near the capabilities of a real driver.

Not sure if I can activate normal cruise, I’m sure it’s just radar controlled, and yes, I agree, these are just aids and not to be fully relied upon..

I never use it.

My reason, and I realise that the computer generated fuel consumption figures are only a guide, but I can acheive lower consumption when I control the pedal rather than a computer.

Also with the amount of traffic on the roads, I don't consider it safe to use. That's the set control rather than variable with traffic sensing.

You know the button you press to activate the radar cruise control? If you hold that down for like, 3-5 seconds or something, the car will initially turn on the radar cruise, but as you continue to hold it down, the message it flashes up about Radar cruise being ready will go away, and the car will go into 'normal' cruise control.

From there you can Set/- the speed and it'll just hold the speed you're going at.

I've been finding I use them both, as if I'm at the head of 'the pack', so to speak, the normal cruise is much better - It's more efficient as it switches between MG2 and ICE much more (The radar cruise tends to stay on the ICE much more) and doesn't suddenly slow down at random when I'm coming up to corners with those reflective corner signs. It also doesn't have that weird brief acceleration surge when you first set the speed, that the Radar cruise does.

Be warned, this is the more traditional 'dumb' normal cruise control in every sense, and you do have to brake and steer yourself (I didn't realize this initially as the car holds a straight line really well, and had a bottom-clenching last-second steer when I realized it was just going to go straight on into a hedgerow at full speed at the first bend  )

I do like the radar cruise though, my last car had it and it makes longer journeys so much more relaxing, not sure I can ever go back to the non radar one, I love the way it deals with a traffic queue, it’s like I hear a voice saying “ use the force” ..😀

Yeah, it's a real gamechanger for me in traffic as it means I don't have to waste so much brain power on tedium.

Whenever I get bored of driving I just switch it on

I am absolutely never buying a car without adaptive cruise anymore. Now I havnt really used one much on a YC (other than the few i test drove) but with the Aygo X its basically the thing that made me a toyota fan. It's not perfect indeed, but once you kinda know the quirks it's easy to get mostly the best out of it.

I've had a couple of instances recently with the lane control where it suddenly decided to turn right (like you might steer quickly to avoid a pothole). Luckily, I had hold of the steering wheel and corrected immediately.  Only seems to have happened when I had CC on and radar.  I've been on quiet A roads when this happened.

That happens at least if the road widens to the right. Around here we have some sudden widenings when theres a possible turn to the left and its a relatively high speed road so they make a way to safely pass the person who has to stop to turn if there is traffic on the other side (if you are scratching your head, here we drive on the right :D). It's the lane assist trying to keep more to the right than the left so it might quickly jank to the right if the road widens that way without an actual second lane with markings.

It's basically what I meant in my post above when i mentioned the quirks.

🤣 I know what you mean on lane size.  I'll check more closely next time it happens on what the road is doing.

My wife doesn't use CC.  Today rural A roads she averaged 42mph for an hour  and half and 74mpg.  The return was at 39mph and 66mpg.  Better, I think, than I have been gutting.

Has anyone been brave enough to try letting go of the steering wheel with lane trace on?, I have and I got the orange sign on the dash, i was afraid to leave it any longer in case a hand came out of the dash to slap me about a bit, apparently, Toyota take safety very seriously 🤭

It uses the power steering torque sensor to check if you have your hand on the wheel; If it doesn't sense any torque input for longer than 10 seconds, it puts on the warning, and if it still doesn't it just turns off the cruise control.

This is fairly standard behaviour for radar cruise systems, not just Toyotas, although I don't see how turning off the cruise control suddenly is considered the safe thing to do!!

It's not great, as I've had it flash the warning even when I have been holding the wheel, and have had to give it a little side-to-side shuffle to make it go away. A few times I've even had the warning come up when I wasn't even using cruise control!!

Just be glad it's not using a capacitive system like some newer cars!

Had that on a(n) Hyundai as well.

There's obviously a point between not touching the wheel and death-grip that they have to say "Hey!" 😁

I just learned to give the wheel a (very) little wiggle every so often to keep it happy. Probably helped keep me awake .......
